    This might be a bit of a odd question, but as I said previously, I am not to great with blogging to much as marketing aspect, but what does pinging the blog exactly do?

    I have found the following strategies to be useful for getting good traffic to a blog..

    1)Submit to BlogCatalog, and at least Top 15-20 Blog Directories.
    2)Submit to Top 20 Social Bookmarking sites.. Use Social marker to do the job quickly
    3)Submit articles in High PR sites.. Squidoo, Ezinearticles, Hubpages and more
    4) Maintain good content and post at regular intervals
    5) Submit the RSS feed of your blog to different RSS sites
    6) After every post ping using pingomatic.com & if possible bookmark again

    This should help you to get good traffic..
