I want to start a directory site. What is the advantage of starting that ? Some of here told that PR4-5 directory is a perfect one . What are the sourcs of income in starting a directory site ? Thank you
For income mostly, money is made through charging for listings but they can be monitized with adsense, affiliate programs etc

Well said. Unless you have a lot of time and /or a big budget to fill a general directory, i'd focus on a small topic and become dominant in that niche.
Naturally, the more traffic and PR you have the more you can charge for advertising and/or listing on your site. I have decided to allow free submission of quality sites, making it optional to upgrade to a featured listing. I offer advertising on the site as another way to bring a little in. Needless to say the word FREE is a curse, I have to sort through hundreds of submissions that won't even validate their e-mail address (SPAM) so I am considering charging a small fee for submission to weed out all those junk submissions.
I worked on first directory to arrange links for sites relevant to India around 10 years ago. There was no revenue model Now most of the directories can make revenues from review fee and some are also lucky to sell banner advertisements.
As with any web endeavor, if you make a quality product you should be able to monetize it. Conversely, if you think running a directory only takes a free script, the default template and a free category database it will be like the gazillion other garbage directories out there and will be destined to fail.
I am going to start some directories just for link building for my own sites and for fun...will see from there how it goes...
I don't know if can make much money for it, I am just happy to have one on my own. I may take years to turn some money back for u....I think better focus on making quality directory
its all about the greenies!!! there are 5 star hotels, then there are round the corner, "charge by the hour" hotels its all about how u wanna go about it!!! M.
