Where will the Internet head in 2009?

Just curious as to where other Internet Marketers believe the Internet is going to move in to in 2009?

My personal opinions are a more niche based Internet is the future with a surge in popularity within these areas and less popularity in general unfocused sites.

    Whats your take?

Due to the economy and decreasing advertiser spending, I would expect to see in 2009 and beyound with the start of more sites offering and forcing reoccurring visitors into paid memberships. Basically the business model of offering everything for free paid with Ads will be over and we'll see the internet move more along the pay for it or hit the road kind traditional business model.

IMO,in the near end future, after the economy downturn period, many advertiser will huge spent on the marketing section and there will be some new ads offering company come out to the market and begin compete with current ads provider. As usual, they will offer more attractive rate to both advertiser and publisher

With the amount of people losing jobs these days i think web traffic will rise with more people stuck at home and more people trying to start online business.

    Agree.
But people are spending less and less, while more people are entering the game. the slide becomes thinner. Only established ones stand still. Advertising spending structure changes with more online business spend. Google's profit still rises.

2009 will be known in the history books as the "Great Online Depression".

It's going to be exactly the same, but more saturated and probably less earnings as there is the same amount, but to share around more people. There'll be more spammy sites that people stick affiliate links/adsense on, the rates for services will get cheaper and cheaper to the point where only people in poor countries can survive.

    Basically, worse. :eek::p

This year, I have seen a surge of website owners realizing that better content and better design = more money. I think that trend will continue. Of course, newbies will saturate the lower levels of the market, but that is always the case.

    Yeah, good point.

I just think that as the economic crisis gets worse, with people losing their jobs all over the world, more people will look to make a living online, and, because of forums like DP where the newbies seem to rule (not saying DP is bad, but you quite often get lower end webmasters telling newbs they have to be lower end, too), people will make lower end websites. This'll mean there are few good domains left for the quality sites until the prices of domains are pushed up so high it's not practical to buy websites.

I think it will still grow, maybe with slighlty less speed. And will continue this trend at least 3-4 years more.

I agree with the others, in that I heard a little while ago that sites like Google were going to be changing the way a user searches for things by making everything more niched.

I don't think it will be completely over..the internet can't just have one type of advertising...various forms of advertising and marketing will continue to exist...

The internet will continue to grow but at a slower pace. Online gaming, social networking and online retail will expand although I expect many online giants to go under.

Due to the economy and an increase in unemployment, I believe that hacking will be on the rise, paid memberships will decrease to compensate for the low subscription numbers and more and more services will become free focusing mainly on Adsense or ppc advertising.

    I could be wrong though

The internet is going to grow and grow. We have hit recession and this will affect the internet, rising gas prices will lead to people using the internet and more people will decide to build websites. Get in there before the unemployed bunch do!

i expect more money to be spent on the internet in 2009. I think people will be more price sensitive and will still buy the things they want but they will shop around more
