Ron, have you tried this plugin? It's free and you could just spend some money on having someone to customize it as it will cost a lot more to get it coded from scratch.
Yes I gave this some thought but it does not have everything that I need. Plus now I want to be the owner of the plugin In case I choose to sell it or whatever. I guess this is harder than it looks. I am willing to pay top $$$ for this plugin.
Sitepoint and most marketplaces don't run off wordpress plugins for good reason. You would be better off getting someone to code you stand alone marketplace software.
While thinking as this as of an investment into a script that you would then sell to the public, you should also consider the fact that a script is valuable if it has got a developer or a group of developers behind it working on bug and security fixes, feature enhancements, customer support. That will ensure long life of the script.
