While google certainly has problems, but for competitive keywords, yes most have relevant links. Hopefully you know that google no longer shows a lot of these backlinks as a backlink because webmasters were simply finding the top ranking site and then trying to duplicate their backlinks - and that backlinks are only one part of the google algorithm.

I have only been at this for a short 3 months, but I have read and re-read everything about SEO and I can say it is difficult but you will be better off learning it yourself. Even if you decied after 3 mon. that you want to hire a SEO company you will have enough info to avoid the scams. If learning from mistakes make you more intellegent, I am closing in on Einstein at a rapid pace, but I am here for the longhaul and not expecting to see results after only a short time. Try it for 2 months and if you don#T like it get a SEO company to do the work.

Back links may be only one part of the Google algorithm, but what else is important.

it seems like on page optimization while important for smaller sites is not that necessary. a site with high quality links will blow away any site with on page optimization.

For a lot of of people that isn't an option. Not everyone looking to optimise their site is sitting at home running a small business.
Most of our clients are large UK companies that it simple doesn't make sense for them to sit down and learn it themselves. It cheaper to oursource than it is to do things in-house.

There can be no specifications as in such, but when you contact someone with your site details and get a reply from them! The way their reply comes is enough to make you understand what the optimiser has in his head or how much he actually knows!
I receive about 5-6 contact messages via the form on my blog from webmaster and marketers questioning about some point of SEO, some have trivial issues which get fixed in a single email, while others move on to get some paid consultancy!
Regarding proven results, SEO is not about getting your site on top for a particular keyword, SEO begins right from the stage of finding a niche keyword for you, then working on that keyword to get you on top!
So we can safely initiate our SEO expertise in that and yet assure you high rankings on keywords!

John, Glad to see you here mate :)

No offence, but all I have seen is one lined useless posts from you that don't go about anywhere with the topic! Negative coming your way! Maybe you're trying to gain links or whatever! But this is pathetic, no point in being in a forum, when you can't contribute! Even if you can't don't spam the database with useless posts!

what about www.engineseeker.com. They seem like a very good website for SEO work. I have never hired one myself so I am obviously far from being an expert. Could anyone give me their personal experiences, opinions, or thoughts about the company?

    Thanks

I can certainly understand and respect where you're coming from, but their track records speaks for itself. Their clients (including my company) speak so highly of them because of what they have helped us to accomplish-not because of the quality of their website ;) :)
