There may be additional software for the newer PS3 models (40gb,80gb,160gb) which will make them compatible.

So far the 60gb had PS2 hardware built into it.

But that 60 Gb PS3 is not in production anymore!...so the later PS3 had an emulation built into it to play PS2 games..but the newly released ones have not that emulation...so any ideas that this could be treated anyone else!

I think sony will release that in the future.
They can't keep the 160gig users in the dark about the backwards compability.

Playing pirate versions make players less enthusiastic towards games they play cause they know they dont have to apreciate every dollar they spent on it.

They won't bring back backwards compatibility. It raises the cost of the system. They took the feature out to get the price of the PS3 more competitive. If demand is there, they might add the feature back later as a selling point, however, I'm not sure how it benefits Sony to let us play old games. They want us to go out and buy new games. They don't get any money when we buy PS1 games and soon they won't get any money when we buy PS2 games (as soon as they quit making them).

i seriously doubt you will play your ps1,2 games when you have so many great games on ps3, besides you should still have your ps2 anyway so why bother? It doesn't bother me at all, I have the 40GB version

so @project mobius ..the 40 Gb ps3 is capable of playing all PS2 games or not!.....

and lets say befoore they released PS3 ps1 games and console was stopped in production..so ones having ps1 games still needed something to play on...the feature then was added to ps2 and ps3 ...but why not ps2 now?...there must be a big story behind it...

someone give ideas if u know any!

I agree. I've got a 40GB PS3, and although I thought not being able to play my PS2 games would be a big deal, it actually hasn't bothered me one bit. I've got my chipped PS2 sitting right next to my PS3, and I think I've turned it on TWICE since getting the PS3. Most of my *homebrew* discs wouldn't work in a BC PS3 anyway :p

If you want to play PS2 games, just go and buy a new PS2. The new ones are cheap, tiny and sexy (unlike my ancient fatso PS2).

i don't see why its so hard to find one if you actually try, and i don't see any time soon about cutting ps2 production infact there are still games coming out for ps2, its your fault for waiting for so long to get a past gen console.
