Was Woolworths so wonderful?

Just thought I’d post an entry about the demise of Woolworths. Personally, I feel it hasn’t come too soon as I do feel they have been a blight on the high street for far too long. I know this is controversial view particularly as 30,000 are facing redundancy and a pretty miserable Christmas but hopefully they will find new jobs in the new year.

For anyone interested, a fuller posting on the subject, (perhaps somewhat controversial) can be found in my blog.

Woolworths went out of business here in the 1980s. I haven't even heard of that name again since back then!

Im not surprised they went bust, it was much of a nothing store I thought. But im surprised they didnt try to last out through the christmas period as surely that must be when they make the majority of their profit?

It is a weird sort of store, eveything they sold I personally would get from somewhere else. Havent been in there for ages but it is a traditional store that does have a faithful generation of people that use it.

I think it generally was probably more successful in smaller towns where there weren't so many other options.

Think it will be a shame though as it's one of those stores / places you get used to seeing.

I think your view of Woolworths depends on the sort of place you live in. In the little market town I grew up in, it was the 'general store' that everyone used. But in the city I live in now, I walk past them wondering what they're for.
Maybe there was a business model to be built on that premise - general stores for small towns - but I guess that's not where the money is, even if you do it on a large scale. And hence the demise of Woolies.

Its a shame they are closing here in the UK, I will miss it.

I think the Woolworths name disappeared from the USA around 1997 but they still have the wonderful Woolworth building in NY.

They should have diversified into food 10 years ago, taking on the mighty Tesco at their own game. Woolworths in Australia is the biggest supermarket in OZ.

I didn't realize Woolworth's was still around. They left my area sometime in the 80s. Ha, I remember having a strong urge to set all those caged birds free in that store.

Yeah, reminds me of a Wal-Mart that was built in a neighboring city several years ago. The mom-and-pop stores in my city have seen a great decline in business since Wal-Mart opened. But does city council think that has anything to do the lack of customers? No, of course not. They blame it on a lack of city benches and a 35-mph speed limit.

Yeah, so let's lower the speed limit and buy benches. That'll solve everything. Never mind the great big corporations that are sucking America dry.
