Personally, I would have thought link building was an important part of SEO strategy. But here, it has a forum section on its own separate to SEO. What do you guys think?
Obviously, link building has a lot to do with SEO. But I think it also has to do with onpage factors as well (meta tags, h1 etc).
Link building is important. Basically there are two types of SEO, internal and external. Internal, you are dealing with your own website, like using title tag, meta description, etc. External means you need to build link. You need to balance the internal and external.
All in all, the thing is that SEO is huge and involves link building too, amongst others. Link building is, on the other hand, a huge topic also and even though it is a part of SEO it still deserves a new thread.
The link building is only the hardest part There are a lot of other steps such as on-site optimizing : friendly urls, keyword density, unique content, fresh content, etc.

Agreed. In fact, link baiting works on this technique of fresh content. Offer content that's unique and useful so that visitors link to it without you having to ask for a backlink.
SEO is everything that has to do with Optimizing a webpage for the search engines. This includes link building, on page seo and off page seo.... It is everything that has to do with ranking better! Simple.
A SEO Professional always concentrate on links building. So there always need to separate link building strategy.
