I am new to the web design world.

I need software to design a website. I found Serif WebPlusX2. They don't have a trial download so I am looking for peoples opinions on it before i buy.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

We suggest the following two programmes to create an ideal website solution,

    - Adobe Photoshop CS3/4
    - Adobe Dreamweaver CS3/4

Which ever is best, however if you have some cash in your pocket, why not invest in having a design firm design a website for you,

    Regards

    FREE/OPEN SOURCE
PSPad is great for coding, it's open source and free. You can also run it from a USB stick using PortableApps.

For designing, creating images etc. then try GIMP. Personally, I think the interface is awful, but it does nearly all the basic things that Photoshop does.

If you're going to spend money, then just bite the bullet and get Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

I've always been of the opinion that anything on the internet should be free, unless there is good reason for paying for it

I have recently obtained a free copy of Web Serif Plus X2 and have been using it since mid December 2008
I much prefer the experimentation method of learning and I have already managed to complete a 30 page website in about 3 days

In general I started off with MS FrontPage Express
I then started to learn HTML and moved on to asp and then php
I then found I was rarely using MS FrontPage Express, using more as a quick reference if the code I had created resulted in a strange outcome

I am so impressed by Web Serif Plus X2, the main advantage is the time saving if you have quite a large website to build and maintain in the long term

well, I'll be right out and honest: I don't think Serifweb creates professional websites.

Web design is knowledge. What web design knowledge does Serifweb teach you?

It's not about the tools - only your skill and knowledge builds professional websites. You need to learn HTML and CSS, maybe PHP and then you're a web designer. You can use any tool from Notepad to Eclipse, to Dreamweaver or whatever you like - but the web is a collection of images and text.

when there are excellent image creation tools like GIMP and Inkscape that can create professional quality images, I don't see a need, especially not yet, for Photoshop or Fireworks.

And with great code-assisting tools like Eclipse or Aptana being available for free, I don't have a need for Dreamweaver. I paid for my Adobe software and it's worth the money, but don't fool yourself thinking that you need to buy software to create a website - just because I have it doesn't mean I don't use other tools as well.

I have Photoshop and Dreamweaver and use them, but I also still use GIMP and jEdit because they all have different strengths.

Go to w3schools.com and go learn web design, it's fun and rewarding.
