This is not a programming question but I want to know which skill is more marketable or more demanded. PHP or coldfusion?
I'd say the PHP market is much larger and more in demand, but if you are good at CF, you can make more money doing it. PHP contracts usually see you competing with a mass of open source software and tons of people who bill on the cheap. With CF, a lot of my projects involve Flex or Media Server integration, and these projects usually have budget. CF work is harder to get, but pays better and is more fun. That's my experience.
I agree with robhustle and would encourage you to learn Flex along with ColdFusion. PHP has come a long way from being viewed by the corporate world as a tool of hobbyists and kids. The work I found with ColdFusion was always enjoyable and usually with a young company that was taking off. PHP jobs seemed to be smaller projects that might never take off, often it was an individuals personal project and they chose PHP because it came free with some cheap hosting they bought. Now I see good size firms embracing PHP. It actually pays to have multiple programming languages in your tool box.
If you are thinking about Flex then you should also really consider Coldfusion as they work so well together. Lately the demand for Flex developers has increased dramatically and I still do see alot of work around for Coldfusion. As there are less Coldfusion developers around the pay is generally higher and there is less competition for the work the CFML ( Coldfusion, OpenBD and Railo ) community as seams to really stick together and support each other from all over the globe. I do agree that learning several languages is always a bonus.
wow you guys make me wanna refresh my knowledge on coldfusion. thanks for you clear picture on this issue
http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/ Flex is a Framework for creating Rich UI. You write code in MXML and Actionscript ( the mxml is converted to actionscript when you compile ). It run's in the Flash runtime so its platform independent.
Hi, What about ColdFusion ? I have heard from some one that in US ColdFusion Market is very hot. Is it true ?
A lot of ColdFusion programmers added Flex to their arsenal over the last few years and tend to be busy with Flex so the supply of ColdFusion programmers may be smaller while the demand may be steady.
Very true cfml dev work has expanded in the US and AU. There are many new cfml devs comming on the market due to the influx of demand and there seams to be no shortage of Coldfusion jobs in site.
Another thing you may not know - many large government agencies use ColdFusion. I live near DC and there is no shortage of CF jobs, but there IS a shortage of experienced developers, so they pay top dollar out here.
