What are some of the businesses online? A merchandising business, a business that offers a service, etc.

virtual assistants are all the rage among small businesses. They're essentially like online secretaries. Lots of overhead gone, no need to provide benefits, etc.

Most online web businesses can be classified into some of business models below:

    -Intermediaries/ Resellers (Affiliate Marketing)
This is basically where you become affiliates or resellers of other people's products or services. You could do it ad hoc and in less organised way from getting products from one place and reselling it or you could join affiliate networks like Commission Junction and resell the products in that maarket place. Forex trading or ebay trading are variations of intermediary model

    - Online store/ Retailer
You can put up yr own unique products from your own country or from someone else and start your online store or use Dropshippers. Though if you Dropshippers instead of yr own products then you are like an intermediary
Digital download sites that sell software or applications or any digital content like itunes fall into this category

    -Freelancer /Service Provider
Basically you work for the buyers providing services like design/ Programming, content creation, posting services etc.

    -Content Publishers
Blogs/ sites with content set up to earn from PPC programs like Adsense fall into this. Besides earning from PPC, these sites may also earn from PPA (Pay per action) programs and also sell advertising space like banners, links, blog posts , reviews etc. In a broader sense, these are like intermediaries cos you basically put up content/ information to sell stuff for others.
