Which domain gets more weight?

    Hi guys

    I have a domain yourdomain.com and yourdomain.co.uk it's both the same names.

I want to know does google put more weight to the .com site even if the uk site is only targeting the uk? The reason I'm asking is that I have noticed that my .com site is in the top 10 but in the uk its in top 20 to 30 of the serps.

    I'm confused

A .co.uk TLD would do better than a .com TLD in Google.co.uk, everything else being constant.

This is because Google implements principles of Geo-targeting to serve most relevant results depending on the geographic location of the user. I hope it explains your confusion.

Obviously in google.co.uk you can see most of the top ranking site are having .co.uk domain. Specefic domains always matter, but still if you want rankings for your .com site, then try to get backlinks from .co.uk sites. I bet your rankings will increase.Good luck

Your targeting visitors in uk – go for co.uk
Your targeting global visitors – go for .com

Yes all the sites are set to target their regions, but what I don't understand is that the .com site is not optimized but is in the top 3 results. the .co.uk site is optimized and has back links from high pr sites with the targeted keywords, but has rankings in the 20-30 results.

What do you make of that? Could this be because my competition is higher in the UK?

Where are these domains hosted? When you compare 'only' domain TLDs of course .co.uk would rank better in UK. There are other factors that are making your .com rank better in UK :)

It could be many factors mate, how old both domains are, how fast your .co.uk domain got the links - if it was too fast then you could be penalised for over-optimizing. All things being equal, a .co.uk will rank higher in Google.co.uk, so it's obvious the domains do not have equal conditions.

    Hi guys

The .com is hosted in the US and was registered in 2002 This domain has alot of affiliate links pointing to it and nothing more really.

The .co.uk is hosted in the UK and was registered in 2005 it also has links from uk domains and .com domains. This includes affiliate links and other related links that we got for seo purposes.

Still the .com ranks better, just remember that the .com ranks the top 10 in the Canada Google. I want the uk one to rank tops in uk but it doesn't go higher then the top 20 rankings

It's probably because in 2002, it has now been almost 7 years your .com site was up. Google sees websites like wine, the older they are the better they taste in pagerank!

Another factor that could be playing in to the mix is whether or not you update one site more than the other or if you have video on one and not the other. Is the XML for each site resubmitted each time you add or change content on both sites?

    Just a thought.
