When registering a longtail domain which is better for SEO with or without hypens? For example if I wanted to optimize a website for the phrase: how to make money with affiliate programs would it be better for SEO to go with: howtomakemoneywithaffiliateprograms.com or how-to-make-money-with-affiliate-programs.com Strictly for SEO, obviously I can't expect the visitor to remember a url as long as that. Thanks
Yes a general keyword with combinations would give you more keyword options, but if you have the specific phrase in the domain name it's more effective. Thanks
I would avoid having too many dashes in the domain name. Domain names with more than one or two dashes are typically only used by spammers. As such, I wouldn't be surprised if the search engines gave such domain names an automatic penalty. A long domain name can be a pain in the ass though. Remember you'll have to type (or copy & paste) that domain name for every link you get.
Yeah I heard something about searchengines and hypens. I just thought that maybe it would be more recognizable by the searchengines or they might give it more weight or something, but I guess you're right and it might work the other way around. As for the long domain well there's a fair amount of searches and almost no competition. Anchor text hmmm... that's another problem. Thanks
howtomakemoneywithaffiliateprograms.com is unique than how-to-make-money-with-affiliate-programs.com because search engine allow 1 to 2 dash ( - ) in the each domain. If your domain is more than 2 you cannot build more traffic and its difficult to rank in the search engine.
Okay without dashes then. I just thought maybe it would help the searchengines to distinguish the keywords I'm targeting, I guess not. Thanks
but why to jump in valley when you know that you will die. Why not you are going for short domain which is good for both visitors and search engines.
Let your domain be short, easy to remember but at the same time has important keywords; if you are still insisting on use of dashes, use no more than two.
Dashes used to help more in the past than they do now. Google and the other SE's have improved thier ability to discern different words but there is still a slight advantage to using hyphens however I would not use more than two hyphens personally.
That seems to be the choice, few hypens if any. Yeah I remember reading in the past something about hypens in domains, but that was many years ago and algorithms change. Thanks
People have been bum marketing for years now targeting long tail keywords. I'm just using an exact match as a longtail keyword as the url which helps when getting rankings. Like I said it's a specific keyword phrase that has amount of searches and almost no competition on Google. I'd rather target a phrase that's easy to rank for. Some people even target other searchengines rather than trying to go up against the big G where some competitive niches can be extremely difficult to rankings even with obscure keyword phrases. I don't expect visitors to remember or to bookmark it, it's just a one time visit, either they buy or the affiliate cookie is set and the merchant will follow up. Thanks
Well if you have a longggggrunnnnnonnnnn domain name, it is probably best to separate the words with dashes. I've heard from some sources that search engines view hyphens/dashes as a space (which is good to show word separation). Therefore, if you just use one big long jumbled up domain name it could be mistaken to be just One BIG Word. Also domain names are cheap, so I'd suggest getting a long one for seo purposes and register a shorter version to redirect to it (which will be good if you're marketing offline or elsewhere and want to give an easy to remember name to someone).
