In the midst of a recession North Dakota is thriving

This article from the NYTimes, which is repeating news found elsewhere, reports that North Dakota's economy has been thriving, with car sales up from last year, hardly any foreclosures, and a state budget with an excess of $1.2 billion.

While other parts of the nation are struggling North Dakota has been booming. Local economists suggest that the boom during the last year might slow down or reverse as national trends catch up with the state. Still this state is doing great.....and it needs workers.

A great swath of the US, representing a relatively large geography, but essentially thinly populated, representing the Plains states has been relatively untouched by the foreclosure crisis. North Dakota sits at the Northern edge of this region. Additionally the state is booming from oil drilling and has manufacturing plants building wind turbines and other aspects of the energy industry.

Finally North Dakota didn't go in for crazy loan generation.

    Keep it up North Dakota!!!!!!!

Isn't there only like 800,000 people in North Dakota? How hard is it to thrive with 800,000 people?

Yep. It is small. Still there must be areas of around 800,000 or so in Florida, Nevada and California which are just suffering.

It didn't generate crazy home loans, and is strong in energy. Its a bright light in a bad economy.

The places in Florida, Nevada and California are suffering because the local economy is suffering, if Florida had a population of 800,000 people I bet the economy would be different.

if people dig themselves too deep into trouble (as US has) then, it would be difficult, no matter how few the population is !!

Well, people dig themselves only if the population is high and there are more people wanting to utilize lower resources. Come to India man- you will know what resource sharing is :p

It's probably because there economy isn't as heavily based on financial products.

The deflation in wheat and oil should slow the North Dakota economy.
