The SEO benefit of your signature links is probably minimal. So my recommendation would be: don't let the tail wag the dog. Ignore the link benefit (if any), and post because you are interested in the thread and want to get into the discussion. Otherwise, you could make much better use of your time on other aspects of SEO.

Listen to Jim. He is a very knowledgeable man. Sig links are more for direct traffic.

if you are not sure how often you should post to get some benefit from signature, then i would not suggest you to even bother posting. signature links are for people who are gonna post anyways and get the benefits from the signatures on the side. each thread on DP has 20 posts and lot of members have 4 signatures on their profile. out of all those external links on a single page (count the adsense links as well), you link will have verry little value. also, most of the threads only gets crawled by google once or twice and sone dont even get a chance of being crawled. keeping all these in mind, i can say sig links dont count much.

I am totally agreed with Jim. Signature links are not very much beneficial for SEO point of view. But these signature helps you to get direct traffic if you have good number of posts and you are providing good discussion and information in your posts.

One more benefit I think is that these forums are regularly crawled by Search Engines and hence with the help of these signature links your site's crawling speed also increases. If I am wrong here Please correct me.

People can post on forums as frequent as they want it to, even from time to time as much as they like it. But for me forums signatures are less important in SEO, I believe that it is in how much you have learned in every thread you went and posted that benefits you being an SEO...

I cant believe you guys really think that forum contribution carries little weight in SEO.. I beg to differ 100%..

I got my first Google rank as a result of a backlink I got from a forum... I then retested it by adding a new link to that same signature and that website received a Google Rank of 1 aswell.. showing that there definitely was power in forum contribution.

I continuously added content from there on out but it wasnt until I started expanding to forums of higher PRs that my ranking increased again. I also know that when I join some forums just putting my website on my profile of the forum generates backlinks for me that show up in Google.

I honestly have to say that forum contribution holds alot of weight in SEO and the best thing to do would be to contribute a little everyday to the forums you are apart of. Every post is a link back to your website and you can capitalize on this heavily. Everything in the post matters, the title of the forum thread.. aswell as the title of your posts.. and keywords within the post.

What I would suggest to anyone is to join a couple more forums and just contribute and watch over time as your links build up from different high PR forums you will certainly see that forum contribution holds weight when it comes to SEO.

Actively participate in forums like dp from the point of gaining / sharing knowledge but not from the angle of getting backlinks. If you give more importance to the latter aspect, you tend to spam. Just be yourself and the will to learn / share new things will get you more backlinks as bonus. Hope you could have understood by now :)

Yeah i find them more useful for getting a site indexed, and not much more! It allows for a small trickle of clicks through the forums.
