Weird: I am number one for keyword with 2,7 MILLION searches, but traffic is minimal

I have a website that is number one (for US google) for a keyword that gets about 2,700,000 monthly searches according to adwords tool. Yet I get only about 40k visitors per month from that keyword.

I am also number one globally for a keyword that according to adwords tool gets over 800,000 searches per month yet I also get only 40k visitros per month for that keyword.

Whats going on? I have this positions for a long time already. Is google misleading in their adwords tool? Are people clicking a lot on other positions? Is my description not good enough?

    Any similar experiences?

    thanks!

It's impossible to tell... You'd have to share more information with us.

Use exact match for the keyword. You are probably looking at broad match.

no, I am looking at the exact keyword

I don't see any difference in me telling the keyword here. I was just wondering if anyone else has similar experience?

Exact match keyword getting 2.7 million searches? Sorry I find this hard to believe. What tool are you using? Is it an adult keyword?

Me too. I assume you realize that to get the exact match dcristo spoke of, you need to put the keyword phrase within quotation marks in the search box?

Perhaps your title is weak, perhaps your site's description is not good enough? Maybe the trend of that keyword is downwards. There are a number of factors that could result in poor results. Also, how long have you had this position? It's sunday today so you can not really expect a lot of traffic.

Log out of your google account. I've noticed that google displays slightly different results when logged in.

Don't these google tools also take into account - other peoples sites ? so if you were to buy an ad then that is the expected daily traffic ? I didn't think that they (adwords tool etc.) measured JUST search engine traffic ....

It's estimated search volume. The content network is completely separate.

nevertheless the it's ESTIMATED. and i often found out, that it's completely wrong => 1000% difference is what i'm talkin' about.

if the keyword is searched quite often - like your's is - you should maybe prefer google trends as it brings better results... (what says google trends? is it near to adwords or near to your traffic results?)
