Lawn Bowling Has Become a Highly Competitive Sport

Lawn bowling is an outdoor sport that does not require much of physical strength. It is a sport that started in Britain in the 13th century and is one that has since become quite popular with people of all age groups. It originated as a sport for old people, as it was an activity that gave them some form of exercise while being outdoors.
Lawn bowling is usually played on a grass court that has to be smooth and level. A white ball called the jack, a ball two and a half inches in diameter, is first put into play by any of the players decided by the opposing teams. The length of the grass strip on which the game is played is about 75 feet. Teams can consist of one, two, three or even four players. Opposing players from the teams, then bowl their 5 diameter balls that weigh about 3.5 pounds, to positions as close to the jack as possible. These balls bulge on one side and this does allow it to have some bias, which makes the ball lean on one side and curve as it slows down. A bowl that touches the jack is marked by chalk. The end of the rink has a ditch and bowls going into it are considered out of play. This penalty does require having a lot of control on the force players use during lawn bowling.
Each team will have a number of chances, four bowls in singles or doubles, three bowls in teams with three players and two bowls where teams have four players. A point is given to the team that has the bowl closest to the jack, after all players have had their turn and the innings is concluded. The next inning then takes place by bowling to the opposite end, with the side that has scored last having to bowl first. A game ends when a team has scored 21 points.
When lawn bowling first started, balls were made of stone or wood. Earlier players dressed in white and were referred to as leghorns, bringing chickens in mind. Tactics in lawn bowling are very important in team games, and involve displacing opponents bowls to deny them the advantage of being close to the jack. The areas where the bowls can be rolled are decided in advance and have to be adhered to. The sport of lawn bowling has led to it being an acceptable form of sport that is practiced in many international events like the Olympics.
