There cant be any accurate idea about the number of backlinks required to develop a PR . The more the better << dont make it a linkfarm >> . Quality of link matters aswell .

    PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

is an accurate calculation of PR

    where
PR(A) is the PageRank of page A,
PR(Ti) is the PageRank of pages Ti which link to page A,
C(Ti) is the number of outbound links on page Ti and
d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 10, depending on relavancy

    Guideline

    18 PRx links to get PRx (i.e. 18 PR5 links to get a PR5)
    3.339 PRx links to get PR(x-1) (i.e. 3.339 PR6 links to get a PR5)
    3: 101 PRx links to get PR(x+1) (i.e. 101 PR5 links to get a PR6)

the "more the better" only applies for PR. considering trust is more important than PR right now, don't go the "more is better" route...

if you're asking how many links you need to achieve a certain PR, it's rather obvious you don't understand the fundamental concept behind PR. PR is not about quantity. do more reading... preferably reading that isn't even about PR, as it's not nearly as important as it once was.

Far away to be accurate anyway.
I have a mysite.com/file as a PR3 with no advertising, no backlinks, no nothing while the mysite.com is PR0 with no backlinks either...

    No :D

The bottom line is relevant inbound links no matter how they tweak their formulas.. Therefore, I just concentrate on link baiting :)

It has always been an logarithmic PR, so let decide google what would be PR of the site.

Many people have tried to predict including one good tool (following link) but no one fully accurate
    http://www.iwebtool.com/pagerank_prediction

try having as many as links from the related topics

It depends on you. If you want to have a pagerank 5 or 6 or more you have to get as many backlinks as possible.

    http://www.websitegoodies.com/prchart.htm

But remember that pagerank is next to useless, there are really only 2 advantages of having a high pr.

    1. You can charge people more for text links because many still think it will affect how they rank in the search engines.

    2. You'll get your sites new pages crawled a little faster if you have a pr5 instead of a pr2.
