    I see on-page SEO not as a way to rank higher, but as a way to not rank lower.

    What I mean is that content is king. But quality content which is badly structured ('not optimized" as they call it) will confuse google, resulting in lower-than-potential-ranking.

    A well organized, "optimized" page will let google understand what it's about. But you can still write crappy content and still not rank.

    I always try to meet the user intent early and expand on that part of the content.

    I also just look at competitors to see what users seem to respond well to.
