I have used virtuemart for a quite long time, but lately found magento is also a good alternative for shopping cart script
Which one the best shopping cart you think?

You can't compare the 2. Magento kills it. From the function to the graphical separation.

    hope that helps,

    so what makes magneto better?
    My opinions :
    - Most of all magento features is also available in virtuemart
    - Virtuemart have alot of plugins that will make vm more powerfull
    - there's a lot of joomla templates with can beat magento design too.

For the first sight actually love 2 magento features (that actually not available natively on vm):
    - price by range (well actually there's similiar plugin for vm developed by templateplazza.com http://demo.templateplazza.net/?template=eshop_plazza but will need to join the template club to get this plugin)
    - compare product ( there's available plugin for this for vm, but i can't get it working properly with vm version 1.1 http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=26061.0 )

Magento seems better but what I have experienced is that Magento is much slower. Anybody noticed that?

There are few more features that Magento has and virtuemart doesn't. For example those cool promotions like buy "5 items, pay for 4" etc,

I only visited the demo shop, but I didn't notice any difference between Virtuemart and Magento.

Magento is still too early in development for running a live site with in my opinion, certain things still need "polishing" so to speak

Give it sometime however, and Magento will be the king.

Magento is real good but is slower due to its architecture and needs also more Resources.

Prestashop (prestashop.com) is also a nice, new and very fast Script with a rapid growing community.

Drupal in Combination with ubercard (ubercart.org) is also a really powerful combination with rapid growing community.

I very much like prestashop, but they only do paypal standard. No way to accept credit cards directly on site. Development is quiet and their official forum is a little weak on support.

Done lot of research and used both now. Magento is way better but takes bit longer to get around with it and learn to build skins for it. But once you know it - you love it. Just get a proper dedicated server with few gigs of memory and your Magento will be fast, too!

We took Bytemark's dedicated atom server with 4GB memory and Magento rocks. If you want to share the hosting, then contact me - it's reliable provider and we're happy customers now for more than a year.

Can't say anything bad about Magento yet, but there's a lot of things that look real ugly once you start customizing VirtueMart/Joomla combo. If a next major version of VirtueMart will be anywhere near the mess there is right now - OUCH! I would switch in a blink.

Have you thought about Zencart, osCommerce, Cubecart, Opencart? These could be alternatives too to Magento or Virtuemart...

I use virtuemart a lot and like the application but if you are running a pure shopping site then zencart is my favorite despite it's lack of new programming. i have also been playing around with the new wordpress cart by instinct. It also seems to get the job done and wordpress is starting to become a world class CMS, which may make it the best choice.

We use Magento with all of our custom websites and it works great for whats out there. Our only complaint is there is no Drop Shipper functionality!

magento is resource eater, you will need dedicated server to run your ecommmerce website at acceptable speed. If not? then it will be dead slow..
