What is the etiquette of requesting positive reputation?

See, here's the deal... I was "on a distinguished road" or some such until I decided that I should negative rep a deserving post, putting my reputation at 9 I think. In any case, as superficial as this may be, it now annoys me that when I hover over my solitary green rep indicator square thingy it says I am an "unknown quantity at this point."

    Here is my question:
Is it rude to ask for a + rep in return for obliging someone's digg request or sending someone an orkut invite?

What can I do to get back on my distinguished road?

It's extremely uncool to be anxious about your rep.

Give reds and green as you see fit, but don't go "whoring" for them yourself. It's a nice way of saying thanks for good information rather than bumping a thread or posting when you have nothing much to contribute.

That's one of the easiest ways to get red...every one looks at it like beging for rep...which it is!!! To get green, make quality posts...or for example, expose how crummy Spamoogle is. (Google for those of you in Rio Linda.)

Here's a little Rep 101 on how to get green and not get red, from a pro that's done almost every thing wrong, and look where he's at!!

    1. When you get red, DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!! Unless you want it!!!
    2. Don't make a post about making big bucks when you're doing fraud. We can find out about it, fast. You'll be in da red before you can say the word fraud!!
    3. Is there a topic you know a lot about? When every some one has a question in that area, help them. Some times you might get a green. Just don't help people only to get da green! A lot of newbies for example don't even know about the ref stuff, and newbies need I think 50 rep points before they can even give out rep! As a bonus you'll generate more threads that have back-links to your site, generateing some visitors and leting search engines find you!
    4. If you see a thread about some one who's doing fraud, join in and fame them, bash them, cream them, crucify them...you get the idea!!! Some one who does fraud is never right. Every one will agree with you except the person who did the fraud, or is on the side of the fraud freak!!
    5. Like to have fun and just chat?? Live down here in the Off Topic boards. Have fun, make people laugh, just don't try to be a wacko, or you'l be knocked down to red. Only ONE person has ever became a wacko and lived to tell the tail and be in the green!
    6. Don't post nasty images, lots of ahem... bouncing smilies, ([IMG]), 1337 talk, anything that would drive normal humans insane, unless you are the official wacko that knows how to do it right.
    7. Try not to talk politics!!!! People on your side will give you green, the other side will give you red! Come election day, vote for the Wacko for President!! (Say that, and you'll be bombed with red!)
    8. Don't *bump* threads!!!
    9. Post like you got English, spelling, grammar....skills. Unless you're the wacko and have learned the da, iz, pze, waz...language!

Do all that, and you can get something like...

Why? Because I breached the taboo subject of reputation?

If anyone wanted to red rep me for starting a thread which:

    1. I could not find had been previously covered in DP
    2. I was genuinely interested in what people had to say about
    3. Was posted in "General," for which the definition is "talk about whatever your heart desires"

    ...so be it.

Although I am pretty new compared to some of the veterans who have replied, the thread did accomplish what I was seeking, in that it answered my question about what people had to say about asking for reputation. There are a few members here (with not so poor reputation) who I do see asking for green reps all the time. And, in fact, the reason I asked was that seemed like a faux pas and I wondered if I'd gotten the wrong impression.

I am prepared to handle the consequences as I try to become part of a community of people who seem to know more than I do about the subject.

    Never mind the Wacko.

Fortunately you seem quite sane so the consequences would never be so dire

Unfortunately this forum attracts the odd kiddie scripter who uses txt speak, is offensive, spams and posts off topic and then wonders why they get a poor reception.

yea, back in the day you don't loss anything when you give red..

so what you ask for green, you got tons of red..

but if you dare to ask ppl to red you, you get green.......

but now no one really red anyone anymore, unless you really offense someone

i have that too, they green me first and ask for green exchange...i just ignore them

i've seen some people actually 'begging' for green after they've submitted a quality post. That should be avoided!

I Usually judge many people by seeing their rep - Green or red

Many people request for a green to me - And i just get irritated and Red them
I never like requests :) Just Their quality helping posts can be a source of green rep from me :)

Yep. Exactly that. YART's (Yet Another Reputation Thread) almost always resulted in the person who began the thread getting absolutely bombed with red.

It was kind of one of those forum jokes that the regulars of the forum were in on but it used to get out of hand with people going into double and triple reds without having a clue why, and therefore the Master of the Universe decided to take action and changed the way the forums worked when it came to rep scoring. A good move, I might add. :p
