When I google "by my full name" I would get more than 12,000 urls of websites that had published my articles I had submitted to top article directories during a period of 5 years.

Since less than 10 are listed as incoming links I'm beginning to think that it is pointless to continue to submit articles.

I get 231,000 results in Google for my pen name with quotes for articles. I'd say it's far from dead :)

I have just discovered the reason. Many of the article directories are implementing "nofollow" links. I suggest we avoid them

Not only avoid them, but furthermore ask them for remove your articles. (Why they utilize third parties content giving nothing in exchange?) "Nofollow" might be acceptable referring to unreliable sources, and if the source isn't reliable, they should reject the article.

Google will rarely show incoming links from directories, both link and article. They tend to show homepage links or links close to the homepage based on my research over the last year or so.

Check in yahoo and see how many article directories are counted as backlinks for you.

I used to allow posting of articles on my directory (related only), but jacked it in as the enquiries got less and less, and it took up my time reviewing them etc.

Most were junk, people talking any old crap to get a link. Even the ones who were legitimate eg: posting for the good of others, only wrote about very basic stuff, so the articles were for newbies only.

A big waste of their time, and mine. I can't believe people still write them

There are a couple major problems with article directories.

    1) They don't have visitors. Who the hell do you know who goes to an article directory to read random articles by web marketers?
    2) They use mainly duplicate content.

These type of sites are pretty useless.

Most of the articles are buried more than 1 km deep with little or no chance of being read at all.

Which article directories do not have "nofollow" links?

I did gain over 400 one way backlinks with article submissions. I did use one of the major article submission services and all the backlinks did show up in less than a month. Since then some of the articles have got syndicated so I have been gaining even more backlinks without even doing anything.

I am surprised to hear that you did not manage to get much links at all.
