I have created this thread to let you all know of my hosting experience from me switching VPS hosts from iWhiC to TheVPSGuy.

First of all i would like to mention first of all, they are both very good and well experienced companies.

I had started off with an insane deal with IwhiC, now this deal was a steal, the thread can be found here,

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=934847

You must also admit, that its one the best deals you'd come across.

I purchased this VPS on 16/07/2008. It was setup within 24HR's as stated, which was very good.
I had paid for two installations of a script, 7 dollars each. Totaling 14 dollars.

    IwhiC's Budget So Far = $44 Dollars.
Installation took about another day with slow responses from the tech, Matt which i'm not sure if he is IwhiC here.
Well installation went all good, until i started receiving errors related to cron.

In a support ticket, this is what i wrote.

    And a few responses where,

After a few more responses i get this,

I have stated about 5 times, that the cron HAD to be set-up via root. Yet he had not listened, this is an bad example and support techs not taking the time the fully read what i had said, and also what it had said in the installation file, which also fully stated that.

After everything has been fully set, i felt that i was not getting what i paid for, slow speeds constantly,

I have two packages with them, one VPS and one hosting. Past few weeks IwhiC's server has been down lately, and i once had a PM from a member here regarding this, don't remember who it was from, but if you see this, PM me as i would like to say sorry for doubting you.

I had even asked why there servers are down constantly, and guess what i got? Nothing at all, except a closed ticket.

And my hosting packages, does not even have awstats or webalizer anymore, due to "the server load"

After a day or two, i had problems with my VPS, (my own problems) and they suggested that i get security hardening installed from there tech, for $24.99.

    IwhiC's budget so far = $69

One day after, maybe even a few hours later after a faulty errors and problems regarding my installation i asked for a refund for my VPS. This is what i got.

That is unspeakable, not even a partial refund on nothing.

Also, a respond i forgot to mention

If you had done so? Wouldn't you have known to run cron as a root and wouldn't you know how to listen to tickets?

    Pro's
    - They respond quick to tickets, but they don't respond when they don't want to tell the truth.
    - Support is quick good, for non tech problems.

    Cons
    -Bad tech support.
    -No compensation for anything.
-Lots of recent downtimes, with no explanation at all.
-Making changes without first notifying, for instance, (awstats)

And IWhiC please read this, i would like to say please do not think you are right for everything, everyone can be wrong at something sometimes.

    Total Budget = $69
    Total Time = 5-8 Days

Quite long review, now below will be my move from IwhiC to TheVPSGuy.

Well i had talked to TheVPSGuy a few times before i had asked for a refund from IwhiC because i had already knew it was heading the wrong direction and needed to find a new VPS soon as i was stressed out with them.

I had worked out a very nice deal with him, for $55 dollars i had received almost triple the RAM IwhiC provided, and Double the amount of DiskSpace & a bit more bandwidth, and also 1.5ghz dedicated cpu, non oversold. I'm not sure about this but i hear IwhiC's VPS is oversold by around half.

Well moving on, the total set-up time took two days, one day had a fault Cpanel installation, so i got moved, But i did get extra resources and i got that two days credited into my account. So that made me happy, proving that they care and take the time for each customer.

Total Budget for TheVPSGuy = $55

Everything was quick, and i had received live support via IM throughout the whole day as our timezone aren't to much different.

Now for the script installations, this came totally free. Every that was required and was installed in less than an hour. And this time cron and everything was setup perfect. Just perfect.

No downtime, and i'm being honest, but nothing can compare to the speeds like this. Its amazing to see companies like this that provide the support that customers need, 24/7

    Pro's
-Live Support, True 24/7 tech support.
    -Kindness (Credits, Extra's, Free Installations)
    -Server Speed & VPS Specs
    -Truly Non-Oversold

    Con's
-The only problem i had was the time to get the VPS setup, but it is all good as he has credited and provide extra resources to me.

So in my experience, this is how it goes,
If your looking for a cheap priced host, that does provide true non-tech support problems, then IwhiC is the way to go, Cheap prices does have its problems.
    Tech-Support = $$$$

If your looking for a host that specializes purely in VPS services and tech support, TheVPSGuy is that way to go, and if your looking for better servers and specs and don't mind paying 5 dollars more then your all set.

    IwhiC's budget = $69
    TheVPSGuy Budget= $55

But with all that came with the TheVPSGuy, it will be cheaper no matter what.

This is not to say who's better or who's worst. This is solely to show my terrible experience.

    Regards,

Please reply to this thread, as i want discussion / opinions.

    Yep.

This will give you 2 infraction points ;)

Firstly, I don't think it's IwhiC's fault about your CRON. It says nowhere that the server is managed, so you should assume unmanaged. If you can't manage it yourself, then don't buy a unmanaged service ;)

Ok First I would like to point out that you bought a 29.99 a month unmanaged vps from us.. You could have gotten full management for 25.00 so your total cost would have been 55.00 a month with no extra install fees..

You do not know how to manage a vps so you should have taken us up on the management service. We pay Matt our support tech for his time and he had spent many hours on your vps alone..
Here is your reply after Matt installed everything.. correctly

Here is another problem that you wanted a cron job set up and we set that up for you..

    Hi Kamal,

The cron that you also listed is for the ads and not the apache2 or just the cronjob.php file. I will go ahead and remove the cron job from cPanel .

You asked for a cron job set up and that was what you got and then we realized that you posted the wrong cron.

Here is a different problem you could not figure out and we fixed that for you..

You have 1 Ip address attacking your apache and downloading a file non stop.
This is the path to the file. Either delete the file or move it.
I have banned the ip address
    41.224.166.200 server1.hostwebsfree.com GET /rp/files/CLIPS_RAI_VOL1.mgmatrix33.004.yct HTTP/1.1

We can have a firewall installed and brute force protection
I would recommend having our vps tech do a security hardening and apache tweak for better performance.

    Please let us know.

    Thank You

You had no idea on how to secure your vps, or even set it up we set your vps for you and set up the name servers for you..

If you do not know what you are doing then you should have gotten the management and would have saved you alot of grief.

I am sorry that you had a horrible experience with us., but we wen way above and beyond the unmanaged vps for you.

We could have let you try and figure out why your apache kept failing which you did not know how to restart.

This has nothing to do with us as a company as you bought a unmanaged vps and we informed you before you bought it. Your ram was maxed out to 97% at one time..

Matt is a well known member here and at web host talk and runs a server management company so he knows what he is doing and we pay him good money for that.. That is why the extra cost for either monthly management or per instant that comes up, it was your chose. You chose to go with out the management..

That is all I have to say, we have several happy customers on our unmanaged VPS.

    IwhiC.
