Chris Rock joke. Doesnt make sense?

I used to work in insurance, so the following Chris Rock joke didn't make sense to me.
Got me wondering if people laughed, because they don't know how insurance works.

    -----
You know what's worse than taxes? What's worse than tax is insurance.
They shouldn't even call it insurance. They just should call it ''in case sh*t.''
I give a company some money in case sh*t happens.
Now, if sh*t don't happen, shouldn't l get my money back?

Strange I thought about this joke tonight when I bought new insurance on my car.

It's funny, but I can see why you would look into it too far.

    It's a not a joke, just a stupid man's complaint. :) Jokes need to have a punchline.

I know people think I'm taking it too literally and not having a sense of humor.

Believe me, I have laughed at Chris Rock so hard that my sides have hurt. I just thought this particular joke was geared more towards people's ignorance.

I'm not some advocate for insurance or anything. I don't even work in the field anymore and could care less. It just suprised me, because Chris Rock usually is spot on with his analyzing the ridiculous nature of things.

I usually laugh at Chris Rock's jokes and say "Yeah, he's right. That makes sense!" or "Yes, he's right. The world does work that way!", etc.

But in this case, his assessment of how insurance works is so off, the it's just wasn't funny to me.

It's like the equivalent of saying:
"Now, if I go into a casino and bet $1000 and I don't win. Shouldn't they give me my money back?"

Actually, I think the reason I worked in insurance is why I don't get the humor in this. Because I see the flaw in the logic.
Where do you think the money comes from to pay for those that DO make claims on their insurance? The insurance fairy?

Here's a very basic understanding of how insurance works:
    1. 5 people put in $1 dollar a month.
    2. 1 of those people claims $5 for that month.
    3. All the pooled money goes to that person.

You sound like me that one time, I think it was while watching Kevin James: Sweat the Small Stuff where he was complaining about how hard it was to open new CDs by hand, and I'm thinking; get a knife then dummy.
There are bad comedians, and there and good, but the good ones don't deserve getting over-analyzed. They run out of material too sometimes :)

He's being ignorant on purpose probably, to get a laugh. He's entitled to put on an act, getting 50 to 1 laughs is gold for a comedian.

You just compared insurance to gambling which is kind of funny and eye opening too:eek:

It was a basic view of Insurance and is undermining it, which is essentially what alot of comedy is.
