Importance of fresh content

Just reading through another thread and someone was pointing out the importance of fresh content for serps and I wondered if everyone agrees on this? In my own experience I have been involved with many sites which have very good placement for competitive phrases without regularly updating anything on the site. One site in particular has not been updated for at least 6 months yet has many number one spots. What does everyone else think on the importance of fresh content?

Fresh content expands your reach i.e. a particular article can only rank for a few search terms and in case you loose that ranking you will be in a tough spot. With regular new content, you have the opportunity to capture traffic from more search terms.

I think for a newer site, the content updation is important but for established sites, its not needed as google has trust in that site.

I don't think so i have seen a blogger from india on blogspot earning $$$$ per month but if you are looking for good seo than you have to run for personal domain name but his blog is still rocking .

Fresh content is very important in the eyes of Google. So try to include fresh contents every month to make your site attractive in the eyes of Search engine

It's basic and most important thing for your website or blog,
Google likes frequently change content and give them priority to show up in the serp listings.

Blogspot sites have a sub-domain where if you used your own domain with a sub folder it would be more readily indexed.(i.e. blogspot.whatever vs. yourdomain.com/blog )

In my experience this is not so for google.
But msn seems to like fresh content.
Just something I have noticed over the past few months anyway.

Fresh content is good for news site, bloggers.
For sites like attorney, home state ... there is no need for constant updates. Just create pages with rich content and highly optimized.

I noticed that SERPS don't depend on fresh content. It depends on the anchor text of relevant authority sites linking to you.

I have a PR6 site that hasn't been updated in months and continues to retain SERP crown. I also have a PR2 site with constantly updated tech reviews. And it remains to be PR2 after a year

Who think Google loves fresh content than there are so many good websites are coming on top, lets say for the web designing business, that home page not going to change often and with the same content, website is getting good rank means, you should concentrate to have your quality and unique content....

I think adding fresh content to new sites is ok but for old established sites.. may be the site which you are talking about is having load of quality content also available.. and adding fresh content is not only the way to get a website promoted, there are lot of SEO ways people are getting high positions in search engines..

Google in particular love your website and give it more value if you kept it fresh and updated with only unique content.

I think fresh content implies unique. I think it is definitely a plus but not the end all for established sites.
