This evening at 4:55 in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.

We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.

This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.

We are in the process of communicating with all affected customers. we are planning to post updates every hour via our forum and in our customer portal. Our interactive voice response system is updating customers as well.

There is no impact in any of our other five data centers.

Brooke Kyle: Tonight at 5:45 p.m. here in Houston, a transformer in our H1 data in Houston caught fire, which required us to take down all generators as instructed by the fire department. All servers in the H1 data center are down, as is our ServerCommand customer portal, which are working to move to another data center.
Brooke Kyle: Our management team and facilities staff are on site evaluating the situation. In our latest assessment, we have determined that networking gear has not been damaged, but we are without power so assessments continue. All disaster recovery systems are in motion, and we have teams already working in the data center.

DARN! 9000 Servers is a big amount :| I believe hostgator's servers are affected by this , Hostgator gets all of their servers from TP

That really sucks, but of course, it isn't a reason to leave the host, because it can happen to any datacenter!

Best of luck to you guys who are affected, hopefully it gets resolved as soon as they except !!

I was on TP and got a little scare with Hurricane Rita. The reseller I was using was unreliable so I bailed. I really don'y know if it was the fault of TP or reseller. But it pays to have a back up plan.

I am using Entrecard and just got email from them

Greetings,

Unfortunately, there has been an electrical fire at the data center housing Entrecard's servers. The servers have not been damaged, but the site may be down for as long as 12 hours.

Entrecard is hosted with ThePlanet, and this fire has effected over 9000 websites, as many of the world's most popualar websites are hosted with ThePlanet. They are working around the clock to get their data center back online, and we are hoping that they get it back online fast.

Thank you for your pateince and understanding with this rare and frustrating problem. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing we can do but wait for The Planet to get their datacenter back online.

My advertising provider, ASE Adnet, is down, and so is entrecard. And so is Site Meter. So I have no ads right now and no tracking. Not mad though as this was an unforeseeable event.

My server has been in this datacenter since 2001 and this is the first time I've ever seen something like this happen. I was one of da first users there, way back in the day where some one had to drive to the datacenter just to do requests to re-boot servers, so servers were down for hours!!

The most important thing is no one is injured, equipment can still be replaced. Hope everything is ok for them.
