Unhappy Followed Coop Link to Dodgy Page

I clicked a Coop link which took me to www dollspot com. On this site I was stuck due to a dialog saying "In order to access the site You must click YES", which was impossible to close.

The only way out was end task, should this have failed some sort of moderation or validation or has the page simply been hijacked in some way.

Hmmm... I don't get any dialog (of any sort) when I go there.

Same happened to me - it tried to install their software on to my PC, but would not let me leave the site, ended up doing an end task to get rid of the site!

I tested it from a Windows machine, and I didn't get a dialog, but it did try to install something "for" me into my IE toolbar. The site has been banned from the co-op ad network (along with 4 others the same guy owns that are doing the same thing).

Does this mean activex sites are not allowed in the coop? Why would this effect anything, surely google would be able to crawl. This makes no sense to me.

Has nothing to do with Google or spidering, it has to do with a site installing something without the user's consent (drive by installation).

Activex isn't considered drive by installation though. There are certain things that you can do such as <a folder="shell:startup" that would be "drive by installation".
Netpal requires you to give the option to install or not... the only way it would install automatically is if you had very low security and didn't mind having this installed.

This isn't my site but I believe you should look into it further before banning as this is not drive by installation.

All I know is that I visited it from a Windows machine running IE, and it installed about 5 things (including a toolbar) on my machine without any sort of dialog or confirmation.

That's plenty dodgy as far as I'm concerned. I don't mind ActiveX, but not for drive by installations, which was the case when I test it from a Windows machine.

The ad network is about quality, not quantity. End users clicking on ads don't need things automatically installed for them... at least that's my opinion.

I totally agree with you Shawn, good decision!

Nothing more annoying than sites which try to automatically install (crap!) on your PC.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. I for one hate that people can install active software on my pc without my permission let alone without my knowledge.

Absolutely, good move removing the scumbags. But at least now I know why I didn't have any issues, I don't use IE. I only use Firefox and I'm very glad I do!
