I'll trade it for Google's ranking algorithm. It's secret. The details are at least I believe. Weight = Pages in Google's real index* x N**(PageRank Base Url) + Referal Bonus + Consolidation If Weight >= Cap for this Base URL PR { Weight = Cap } * Not necessarily what you see with the site: command. ** Unknown number.
After finding that I've a site with 7550 indexed pages, PR4, and has a base weight of 5,904, I sure want to understand the weight algorithm Does this mean the cap for PR4 is about 6,000 ?
Then the cap really is kinda unfair - Im giving more then twice the number of links away - ive got about 30,000 pages indexed on www.lincolnvscadillac.com which is PR 5 - and my base weight is 67,500
Maybe you can change the base URL to a subfolder so your weight may be nearer to the cap. But it's still fair though. There's not much added value after showing the x 1000th link from the same site/IP.
Base weight is fair. Maybe it should be raised, but it has to be there. A network of sites can only get so much benefit from one domain. Have you checked with the API? I bet the count isn't as high as that if you do check...
I have a site with lower pr and lower number pages with a higher weight. Has to be supplemetted results.
I disagree - how many of us divide our weight among several sites? Now how many coop members are there? Could be 10,000 ads floating around easily. I doubt I give more then 2 links to any one site -
I think you'd be surprised. The cap needs to stay otherwise the huge sites in the network will drown everything else. Fact.
As SE said, the bigger sites would drown smaller websites. If you are running 5 ads on those 10 000 pages there would have to be 50 000 unique sites so that (theoretically) every site has only one link per page. As second link from the same domain is clearly not worth as much. With the cap gone you would probably find that the bigger sites, with all those pages, would start displaying the same ads from all the other big players in the network which would start smelling like link farm. Thats the way I see it ... the cap is there to protect both the small and big sites ... heck to some extent I think it even protects the network too.
In my humble opinion, the number of pages should affect weight on a sliding scale. Say you have 2 sites. One site with 30 quality html pages. The other has a large number of dynamically created pages (maybe many are rarily seen by humans). Example: A 30 page PR6 site: most of the subpages will often be PR4 or PR5 A 30000 page PR6 site: some of the subpages will be PR4 or PR5 but many will be PR2, PR1, PR0 Does it make sense that site 2 is worth 1000 times more than site 1? I don't know exactly how the weight is calculated, but it seems that some sort of cap is definately necessary.
If G had a nose.. But seriously, that's a good point. I don't know that a series of large sites exchanging links makes them link farms (in fact it doesn't unless that's all they carry - links), but I think you're correct in that an unfair advantage would be seen by the big players. I'd benefit myself, but in the long run everyone would lose out. The coop has flourished because 'whos got the most' doesn't pan out as it would in a commercial environment. Cheers, JL
