ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A federal jury rejected the death penalty for al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui on Wednesday and decided he must spend life in prison for his role in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. After seven days of deliberation, the nine men and three women rebuffed the government's appeal for death for the only person charged in this country in the four suicide jetliner hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001.

Wonder how long he'll stay alive in prison. I wouldn't be surprised if inmates take care of what a jury refused to do.

Patriotic maximum security convicts . . . give me a break. There isn't one of them that wouldn't have taken part in the 9-11 plots for the right amount of cash. They are for hire for anything and everything and it would not bother them for a moment.

Anyone would chose the death penalty if that was the chose. Whatever comes to him, I won't feel any sympathy.

Personally, I'm glad, for two reasons.

The first is that I oppose the death penalty. As much as I want my hands around the son of a bitch's neck, and wish to squeeze his life from his smug face inch by inch, the constraint of those very impulses, I believe, are why we live in civilization and not the life "nasty, brutish and short...coming at the end of cold steel." (There, Will, your boy Hobbes).

The second is that the last I want is for this clown to get his wish, and die like a martyr. We do more harm than good. Let him slip into anonymous mediocrity. His hell, our justice.

Nothing wrong with opposing the death penalty, however, what you describe is not our death penalty nor even remotely a comparison.

That being said, you were probably thinking of something along these lines:

I'm not sure. Maybe in between "death to America" outbursts or "praise be to allah."

Not related to your response, but thoughts in general regarding the topic:

This is a perfect example though, of why enemy combatants should be enemy combatants and not turned over for civil prosecution.

He made a mockery of our legal system, drug it out for years, and millions of dollars were spent on a nutjob terrorist whose only wish is America's demise, and in the end, he gets less of a sentence than any number of people get every day for far less crimes.

Actually, I'm more of a one-cut kind of guy, in practice. ;):

But either way, I find the ceremony surrounding state-murder ludicrous, and the notion that I, or any individual, have the right to take a life - even a piece of shit like this scumbag's - is a flawed one, in my personal credo. I still say, let him rot in a dark cell, consigned to the dustbin of ignominious history.

Neither you, I, or any individual has that right. The death penalty isn't a right, it's a consequence.

Just out of curiosity, do you support abortion? I know it's off topic, but I've found that most people that are opposed to the death penalty and prefer to keep the worst scum life has to offer, alive, have no objections to murdering innocent babies. I've always had a hard time grasping the rationale.

I stopped backing the death penalty when they got rid of ol' sparky and went all pc on this crap. If he would actually "fry" I would be all for that. Given choice now though between the needle and life in a solitary confinement cell? I say lock him up!

I can understand your feelings behind it, and to some point I can see the crudeness in it.

Although I don't really understand the difference between self-defense killing and planned killing of a murderer. The techinque and enviroment may be different, but the effect is all the same.

It's like in war, we only harbor people when they submit. Those rules are generally new and are just a facade. I think it pays to be civil (within circumstance), but personally I don't care if they do anything to him ie you could kick him in the balls every half and hour, if you wanted to. The PC mentality of how we treat actual killers or enemies is rather dangerous if taken to idealism.

These Islamic fools should be given Islamic kind of punishment. I mean he has to be chopped head to toe into a million pieces before he dies.

Why can't America do something about a seperate judicial system for Muslims.

Yes every limb will be broken when he lands in prison. For his algerian descent he can cry "Allah" when the inmates gouge out his balls.

Perhaps I'm a bit ignorant, but what's happening in India that makes you hate muslims so much? Is there something behind these feelings you seem to be having in these threads?

Yes everyday Indians living on the border are slaughtered by the Islamic militants but no, that's not the reason.

Every Muslim I saw in my life had severe attitude problems as though we are less-preferred by a "Desert God". Again that is not the sole reason.

It started 10 years ago. I had an affinity towards Islam. Bought the book, read it and felt uneasy about the hatred it spreads. Did you know that in Islam a Muslim has the right to kill a non-believer and rob his property which is glorious in the eyes of Allah? In Islamic countries churches are burnt, Christians are raped and forcefully converted to Islam. Can you digest this?

In Islam Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael are not Jews but Muslims. Excuse me? How is that possible when Islam came into existence after Christ. We acknowledge Abraham, Isaac and Christ as Jews. Why don't they do?

I have read Buddhism, some Hinduism, and Nietzsche. In fact I acknowledge the truth they say and applaud them. Every religion talks about tolerance. Tell me, which religion brought down the buddhist statues?

Question: If a religion is replacing its predecessor it should be better, shouldn't it? Christianity still does services to the poor, and treats the lepers what does Islam do?

Common ground: There are two possibilities. We become intolerant like them or they become service-minded like us. Unfortunately, the latter won't happen which means we have to become like the Israelis. In short, Hitler would have done a great service to mankind if he sent these idiots to the gas ovens rather than sending the intellects.

Here in India, the tolerance is slowing weaning. Imagine blasts in temples which is holy to the majority Hindus. Couple of days ago, 30 odd hindus were killed by Islamic militants. I don't care who reads this and thinks rot about me. I have just posted the facts.

I hope you understand my hatred for Islam.
