What exactly does this number tell you?

This number tells you the average consumption of the system resources. This can be compared to your Performance tab on your Task Manager. Also this could be used as your monitor of which application on the server are consuming much of the resources and indicator that you may have to tweak certain scripts.

    Hope it helps

As long as the number do not go above 20, you should be fine. It all depends on the hardware your host is using :)

20 will make it feel slow for visitors. If a server consistently stays above your hardware should be upgraded. Yes, a server can handle 2, 5, or 7 (or more) but does it make a pleasant experience trying to pull up a website on that server - I doubt it.

    hi guys,

    i went o cpanel,
and i checked the server status,

and my server load is "12.96 (2 CPU's)"

    i'm using a wordpress blog,
and i keep getting "error database connection",

it only happens when my traffic is at it's most peak,
does the "server load" have anything to do with it??

i'm getting around 10k~20k traffic per day,
    and i'm using a semi-dedi server from a host,

is that too much traffic for the server to take??
    Thanks Guys

Well a load below two is very good. 2-7 is probably all ok but if it is constantly above 8 then I would tell your host. If it is above 15 something is really wrong.

Pretty old topic with some wrong answers

The number if the number of processes currently in queue. If the number is under the number of cpu's you have then everything is being processed with no delay. However most of the time you can get away with a load 2 times that of your number of cpu's.

YES, i've changed to a better server,
but that cost me around $530.00 / month,

that's probably how much you must give to get that much traffic,
so you must at least earn $500++ in order to cover for all those traffic,

    if you're interested,
i can introduce you to my host, which is very very reliable~

    Thanks :D

yes tells u average consumption of the system resources.
and if u want to test it better use a Stress Testing Tool
    like Blast20, FSMax20 or udpflood...

So if I have 8 cpus and the server load is consistently 16 I should tell my host?

Yes, a load of 8 would mean that the server is using 100% of its resources.

It depends... Check which processes are using high percentage of CPU and see if there is anything that can be done to lower the usage and make the server stable. If it is possible, then there is no need for an upgrade...
