Earth hour - What a fraud.

The media is going on about how wonderful earth hour is and how much power we will save by taking part in earth hour. Another typical example of mass ignorance. As most of our power comes from coal powered plants, this one hour, even if everybody cut power use to zero would be not save one thing - why? - because coal power plants take a long time to get up to full producing power capacity, they can't shut down for one hour, or even reduce the furness to low. They can't lessen the amount of coal used as they need to keep up steam pressure up. Letting it cool for an hour and then reheating it will only increase the amount of coal used - so you will have to forgive me because I'll be keeping my lights on. If you really want to make a difference - install a solar panel or solar hot water heater - you will make a real difference instead of some valueless P.C. hour of feel good crap.

But another fact about this... After the big Earth Hour will end everyone will turn on TV that will cause electricity overload and will shut cork's (or whatever they are called in english) out and all city will be without electricity for longer time!
I'm with my 2 hands with you man! :D I will keep it on! :)

I've got a friend who brought two off ebay and uses them to power his caravan on the beach for holidays with a battery pack.

Google users in the United Kingdom will notice today that they "turned the lights out" on the Google.co.uk homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation

LOL... or they could have actually turned some lights off. Do you have any idea how much power their data centers suck up?

I'm always pleased with G that they mostly show some respect to the different important events in the world. No wonder they are on top of their game. :)

google practices what it preaches, as it for quite a while has sponsored electric motor cars, with many different grants, and entrepreneurs incentives, in most cases without claiming any percentage ownership of the projects.

It never ceases to amaze me when I drive by an empty office building with all the lights on at night. That was a pretty ugly page today but google did a pretty cool thing by supporting the movement. Even small businesses can get involved and with the electric prices here in the US it can actually pad the bottom line some.

That's a very good point. If you want to do something that really matters, get solar panels. Another thing you can do is invest in a solar panel based company. This way you can actually make money and empower yourself to make more of a difference. One company in particular that is getting noticed and mentioned on stock market tv programs like Fast Money, is Evergreen Solar (ESLR).
