Post Pentagon Threatens Google

I'm surprised they haven't encouraged Google to black out Google Earth images as well.

Pentagon rattles sabre at Google's Street View

Quote:
The US defence department has banned Google from capturing images of military facilities for its entertaining Street View facility on Google Maps following the shock discovery of intimate pics of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

It said in a statement that the offending snaps included "360-degree views of the covered area to include access control points, barriers, headquarters, facilities and community areas", thereby posing a threat to national security.

Google spokesman Larry Yu admitted to the BBC that the drive-by recording of Fort Sam Houston had been "a mistake". He added that Google has "a compliant image removal policy - not only relative to the military but to consumers also", a reference to privacy concerns which last August led the search monolith to agree to obscure number plates and faces on request.

In the case of the military, Google has wasted no time obscuring the offending military facility by removing it altogether from Street View:

I certainly wont be blaming the Pentagon for that. Do you want your top most military secret to be google out easily? Not just the Pentagon, no other countries' defence forces would allow that.

I can't get to the actual article, I keep get re-directed to "Forbes says Gates is no longer the world's richest man".

Anyways, I guess now that google has blocked out any potentially "harmful" images that it's all going to blow over and nothing more is going to come of this.

Makes you wonder why the Pentagon has not prevented this from happening in the first place.

I'm glad Google went ahead and did what the Pentagon asked. Situation easily resolved.

I don't blame them from not wanting to be shown. It's more interesting that Google tried to show it.

Sorry about the bad link above. I think this was the article.

I believe Pentagon has a strong reason to maintain its secrecy. National Security should be our top priority these days.

That is very interesting. If Google is honoring the US, but not other country's wishes, that's pretty arrogant. What if Baidu (Chinese search engine) decided to show info like that of US government installations!
