sb site reporting spam to google

what do you think about social bookmarking sites reporting spam to google? do you think it is possible? this is from http://linkatopia.com/offline3:

I don't think they are really doing it. It's a huge problem for all social bookmarking sites and even some popular services already closed shop because of a flood of spam.

While reporting to google may hurt the spammers a bit (in case google cares, I doubt they'd ban anyone with pages who don't break any google TOS, they aren't internet police), it won't solve the problem itself, since they'll be back with new domains. So, time spent to report individual sites is better spent for programming some proper spam detection.
