Does #1 Ranking Actually Mater?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by airraid81, Feb 20, 2008.

When I browse Google or any site, I look at the middle of the page, not the top, so in Google, I just see the top 5 results first and click whichever has the most relevant title and description. So does having the #1 rank actually get you more hits than say the #5, or is it just based on title and description once you get that high?

It has actually been tested and #1 gets more hits than even #2 or #3. Out of the top results the top 3 get the most traffic with #1 getting the most of them all. So yeah, ranking #1 matters.

Well, I don't think anything "maters" much at all :D Yes, being #1 will provide you the most organic traffic than any other position, this is just common sense. :)

It's probably not worth crying in your soup over it, but the goal should be to get to #1 or at least pretty darn close.

I just click on the ones with the most bold words. Lol. Which is usually the first one and some of the sponsored links.

It depends really, you could Rank #1 for a term that brings you no traffic which means no sales which means a empty wallet.

Rank for a term that gets traffic and well... Thats a different story.

#1 result gets significantly higher clicks than #2, 3, 4, etc. Google has done plenty of studies on this tracking people's eye movements and clicking habits. their goal is for you to only have to do one search, and one click to find exactly what you are looking for, this is how they make the most money.

Yes. It definitely matters. I've experienced a huge increase in traffic being #1 instead of #5 for an important keyword. Huge difference. Many people just automatically click on the first result.

It absolutely matters... Top 10 is essential... Top 1 is very important. If you're number 9 you might as well not be listed.

One of my sites has been in the top 5 in yahoo for a competitive keyword for about a year now. Some months is first and other times it drops.
    When it is in #1 I usually get about 2500 clicks a month #2 around 1700 #3 1400 #4 800 #5 400.
So yes it does matter, many average internet users I know think that the ads at the top are #1#2#3 so for them being #1 is like being #4.
Many times I do get a lot of sales for competitive keywords in positions lower than 5 but only when a keyword has a really really high volume (over 500 a day). If the keyword is not that high volume you will definitely need top 3.

It 100% matters! Being the very top gets the most visitors as that is what a common visitor will see and click first but you have to mix that with great content also. Watching my dad use Google showed me why, because he always clicked the top result and if it had great content, he wouldn't click anything else.

It is actually a fact that No.11 and No.12 get more traffic than positions 8,9,10.

Most of the times people click on the first 3-6 results then click on the "next page" button checking the first 2 positions (11, 12)

It really depends what your keywords are. Sometimes the 2, 3, 4 results are the more relevant. Especially if its a hard to find topic then generally i read a bit of the description then i click. However say we are talking a kid or even a teen say searching "free online arcade games" the first 5 pages or even more are all going to be relevant. And as such being number one will matter as they will prob click first one they see.
