Just wondering on average how many submissions everyone sees each day, and how many you're forced to reject. When advertising my free directory of directories here, I was getting about 15 a day for a few days, and just about every one was good. After the burst from DP was gone, I started getting multiple daily submissions for sites that do not qualify for my directory. Looking through the last 15 or 20, there was only 1 that qualified. Then today, I noticed money in my paypal account... Someone submitted a featured listing for about $5 that I had to reject and issue a paypal refund for. So now I'm at the point where I spend more time rejecting sites than I do accepting them. I've since bumped my free listings to $1 and added the stipulation that if a site does not meet the requirements, it may be added to the "advertising" column. Hopefully that will help. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? Are there any steps you've taken to ensure you're getting good submissions, and anything you've tried that has/hasn't worked?
When you do free submissions there's a LOT of sites to reject, if you only do paid there is a very small % that have to be rejected. AllDotNet used to be free submissions but it took a lot of time every day checking submissions and most couldn't be accepted, now that it's paid there's a lot less submissions that are rejected because people pay more attention to the guidelines when they are paying.
I have 470 links about (new directory) Denied about 20 of them. DIRDIR Web Directory. - Submit your link if you want. 100-300 uniques a day.
Since I switched scripts and got new categories, my first directory is getting quite a few links submitted. So far, out of about 80 submitted, none have been rejected. About the only ones I will reject, have always rejected, were affiliate links-tinyurls-redirects-that sort of site. Just added another category called Strange to take the overflow if any sites submitted just do not fit other categories. Plus give an additional category for those whose sites are adult, funny, etc. I set it up for now with featured links for $1.00 and getting good response from that fee.
I recently did a free 100 submissions to my directory and only 7 or 8 got accepted. Most were very bad. Obivously I lessen my standards for paid.
Wow, are you serious? You must be giving DMOZ competition with the 93% rejection rate!! I have a reciprocal links directory and even that sees around 20% rejection ratio. But, I must add that most rejections are for sites that have porn, gambling, adult, pharma or other restricted content. Others are accepted.
When users pay for listings they usually follow the listing guidelines. Running a free directory is a headache!
When I was taking free submissions it was getting to the point where I was rejecting around 80%-90% mostly folks that start up a network of MFA sites. As strange as this may seem the spammers are probably helping the paid directory business by spamming and converting most directoires to paid quicker. In the long-run I don't think many purely paid directories can survive unless the owners are very charitable.
I wouldn't be surprised if the paid directories had higher acceptence rates. Obviously each rejection for them is a loss of money... although, users will have higher quality sites if they are willing to put cash down to help them. It's strange how many spammy sites are getting submitted, even though they have no chance of being listed.
The quality of submissions of paid versus free is shocking. The VAST MAJORITY of free submissions are spam, didn't read rules, auto-submitter, mfa, viagra, etc. You don't see these very often in paid submissions. So for me anyway, paid submissions have a very high approval rating (over 90%). Free submissions have a very high rejection rate (75% maybe?).
Recently i closed reciprocal listing option. I never seen a good site that comes with a reciprocal listing. Most of them are garbage site, Adsence, medicine etc. people don't like to use a good option for a good perpose and the result is free directory switched into a paid directory. And this type site owner is not out of our earth. They are our known person. Openly they are not talking about their garbage site.
