Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of facebook, was interviewed by CBS News. There were hints in the article that Facebook is a threat to Google? What do you think?
Facebook is a social network site, it isn't a direct threat to Google, never would be. It is just a small niche a very small subset of the huge search engine industry Google controls.
How are they? EDIT: Facebook is totally different than Google. Google is much bigger and so I do not think they will do much against Google.
It is common for the media to make things looks much bigger or much worse than they really are, expected reporting.
(CBS) Li says Facebook is a threat to Google because it could become the first site people go to, to search. Say you want information about a family vacation in Maui. Li says when you check Google, you could get long list of sites. When we tried, it was almost 200,000 hits long. "Versus I can go on Facebook. I can go and ask my friends, and people will write back to me, 'Oh, I've done things, and this is what I recommend. And knowing you and your kids, they would really like doing this.' So, the next time I do something very specific like that, chances are I’ll probably go to Facebook," she explains. source: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/10/60minutes/main3697442_page3.shtml
Google is a search engine. Facebook is a social networking site. They're in two completely different markets. If Facebook was in the same market, but providing a different solution than I would say maybe. But it's not.
I don't like how you are forced to use a real first and last name on Facebook - you can basically never create a profile for your company, I thought that was a bad move on their part.
Facebook does not pose a threat to Google People use Google to find Facebook Without Google Facebook would not exist
I believe that if someday facebook decides to start a monopoly like google and got their own search engine programmed that was of the quality of googles search engine they may pose a threat because almost everyone in north America with an internet connection uses face book when they turn on their pc. If their was a search box right in their profile that would be rather convenient for them.
No, but Wiki is to shortly release an opensource search engine.... it is a possible threat but I didnt understand enough of their process to see how it wouldnt be open to abuse if users can see the exact algorithm used to work out rankings.
I think what you are referring to is that Facebook seems to have a real buzz around it right now. In the same way that Google did when it was on the rise. I don't think anyone can directly compare Facebook to Google. Google is primarlily a Search Engine and is a major player. Facebook is a social network and is relatively new to the game. Where perhaps Facebook is in direct competition with Google is in Pay Per Click. Facebook's new Social Ads are certainly causing quite a stir in Internet Marketing circles.
I love how everyone automatically thinks Facebook vs Google has to do with search. Google is so much more than a search engine company. Google is a Blogging, pay per click, mapping/imaging, mashup company....the list goes on ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_acquisitions ). Facebook has many similarities with many of Googles acquisitions. The question is, can Facebook provide many of these service all under one name and brand while having a loyal community.
