I started this thread because i got so hacked off when some member with a few thousand posts started a thread about 2008 pr update, which was blatent linkbait for their new datacenter tool.

So if anyone has got any views on when the next update will happen or what pr they are expecting to gain or loose. Please feel free to post them here.

What's the important of a pr? I have not figured it out. Is there a relationship to it being on the SERPs

No, simply put - a page's PR carries no direct relation to SERPs.

PR is one of a hundred factors that the google algorithm uses to rank pages in the index. The toolbar pr howver doesn't have too much value. It's a snap shot of your pr taken a few weeks before the udate and already out of date at the time of the pr export.

Whenever it comes I hope they will not just change randomly the PR numbers (like that did the last time).
It's very frustrating to work hard all the time and get your PR decreased.

PR is very important for selling links

Internal PR is important for ranking but we don't know how it relates to what is exported to the Google toolbar

Well, I have a fresh website from end of october 2007. It has a current PR of 0.
Currently I'm waiting for the site to get a PR of at least 4, before I could move to the next business phase.
You would say now: "But that is stupid! Why wait?". Well, i'll tell you why - from my previous experience with a site in the same niche, most of the customers have Google Toolbar installed, and when they don't see the green bar - they think the site is new and not trustworthy...

You just hit the nail right on the head with a very big mallet. Twice.

It's a known fact if users have the Google Toolbar installed and see the exact same product on two sites, exact same price including delivery, the consumer will always buy the product from the site with PageRank. It's a fact.

Yeah, and that is why, even if we hate it so much that most of us want to puke, PR is important, even if not for SEO but for customers... If that will make my customers happy - I will spend extra time on getting at least PR 4-5 :)

I agree that PR doesn't seem to mean much. But does google not still dance at the same time?

ie, when the update takes place, your serps can change quickly regardless of PR?

Hope it does, because I have done loads of work with links and SEO, and I am patiently waiting for an increase in SERPS
