Do you think that the free traffic exchanges for example startup page exchanges, exit exchanges, ect are worth the hassel?

Here is also a site that has a list of worth while traffic exchanges www.hitsbug.com

    Thanks

My opinion is that they are no benefit. In fact, if I wouldn't even want to be associated with popups, popunders and the like.

I would avoid them at all costs as I havent seen one yet that would be of any use.

PS. You might want to let people know that you have a vested interest in your question (Seeing as how you own the site)

Not worth the time. Tried it at first, quickly realized it was a waste of time and I could get better results long term creating content or focusing on SEO.

This is often really a waste of time. I think that stephfoster is right, focus on content, if you write interesting content for your market you'll get backlinks sooner or later, will pay.

Traffic means nothing if it isn't purpose driven.

I would avoind putting pop anything on my sites as it's so trashy and anoys the hell out of ppl like me when surfing. Now I have a pop blocker, when I enter a site and the blocker shows it just stopped an ad I thing 'ok, this is a trashy site.'

Well.. I think almost, if not all, of them are useless. You get untarged traffic, who really isn't interested in your site anyway, so they leave.

I have NEVER heard of anybody making ANY money using them. (I.e. if they sell something, and use a traffic exchange to get traffic to their site)

And, with todays 'AutoSurf' programs, you wont even get real people viewing your site! People just open another window and leave it minimized, and never view any of the sites.

The only thing they are good for, is for spoofing your stats, i.e. trying to make your traffic look good for affiliates, or trying to get some CPM money..

I have to disagree with some of what was said in here.
Most good exchanges do not allow any kind of pop up or under or anything that disrupts page rotation.
But, if I hadn't found my way to those exchanges I would still be struggling to make an income, and trying to do SEO.
    It's a funny world... :)

I think it almost depends on a few factors such as your target audience, what is the quality of the links, and are there any pop-unders/pop-ups/trick ads. If the service is giving you quality links that won't a.) annoy your visitors b.) take down pagerank, I say try it out and see what you think. These type of services are far from a necessity though, a good all out link campaign can be much more profitable.

Well i have to say that most traffic exchanges are a complete waste of time since thay auto surf sites every 8 seconds. But there are some actually good and worthwhile exchanges that are listed on my site www.hitsbug.com particularly the first 3 (webmasterquest, cash clicking and clicks matrix) since they have anti-cheat methods applied in the exchange which actually works very effectively.

So they arent a total waste of time since the surfer has to actually surf to earn credits.

I have to agree, bloodwrath. I tried many in an effort to boost my readership, but it seems that those involved with hit exchanges are mostly in gambling and info marketing -- not that there's anything wrong with that! -- not my audience.

I thought it might be worth getting useless traffic to raise the numbers for ad sales, but I was on the receiving end of too many spyware and browser bombs. Not worth it to me!

It's better to look for targeted ways to build traffic IMHO.
