Google checkout success?

I currently use paypal on a few sites but I'm getting rather fed up with them. I have started to try out google checkout and it appears it is missing lots of features. Does anyone have first hand experience with google checkout in production? Has it been a success?

If your buyers are US it may be OK. It still hasn't gained wide popularity because consumers have no real reason to switch to it. It's a great alternative payment method especially if you use adwords because it can end up being free. When we implemented it, it immediately surpassed Paypal, but since most of the promotions are over Paypal is leading GCO again. Personally, I wouldn't rely on Paypal or GCO as a single payment method unless your market only pays with them. If you can support multiple payment methods then it's probably worth the try, but I don't think I would use only it.

I have been using Google Checkout for the last 5 months with a site I run, and customers have no problem using it. Infact, the only payment methods I offer are Google Checkout & PayPal, and the majority of them use the google checkout.

Also, Google Checkout has and is free until 2008 for processing credit cards. So instead of paying PayPal fees, all the money is going to you, and they do automatic bank deposits right into your account. You can also incorporate back-end scripts, although it is a little more difficult than your normal merchant.

Cons: If you sell a service that isnt protected in their seller protection policy (web hosting, etc) and you get a fraud order/chargeback, you will pretty much end up losing the sale + $10 chargeback fee.

I think buyers see Google, they know its reputable, and their credit card number is never shown -- just like PayPal

Does a buyer have to sign up with Google Checkout to use it on your website?

I read somewhere that 2CheckOut will allow customers to pay for products or services with PayPal funds. That would be great.

GoogleCheckout was a failure IMO, it's rare to find a site that uses it and when buyers see you have it they may not want to buy..

I thing checkout is currently limited to US customers. If they were to expand to include the rest of the countries, their market share will also increase.

It won't replace paypal. At least not yet. It's suitable to US citizens as of now

U.K. customers can use it as well as U.S.
It has some nice aspects - you can link it to your adwords and Google product listings (the latter is good as you get a bump to the top pf the listings - having the logo on your adwords I'm not sure about, apparently some people think it means you only accept Google Checkout - it doesn't).
I've never had any problems with it, and they transfer the funds to you without you having to ask, as you do with Paypal.
The downside is simply that not many people use it - or even know about it.

I'm still waiting anxiously for them to make it available for other international users. So far only UK and US residents are allowed. I'm sure this will be soon. Hopefully it's sometime early next year.
