Yahoo! China Found Guilty in China

As it turns out, Yahoo just can’t win in China. They have been subject to the same guilty verdict Baidu had been found guilty of a year ago, only Yahoo China has actually had to pay the penalties. Details are sketchy as to what those penalties are, but IFPI, the organization representing large record studios worldwide, appears happy they’ve gotten damages payments out of the Chinese courts.

Here’s the thing, though: Yahoo China wasn’t actually serving up any pirated music. Both Yahoo and Baidu engaged in a process known as “deep linking.” Even less insidious than tracker sites like TorrentSpy’s simply linking to other’s seeded torrents that may contain pirated content, Yahoo and Baidu simply indexed pages that contained links to copyrighted music.

According to John Kennedy of the IFPI: “The ruling against Yahoo! China is extremely significant in clarifying copyright rules for internet music services in China,” he said in a statement that did little but further muddle the issue. “Yahoo! China and Baidu account for the bulk of the problem.”

As TorrentFreak put it today: “Now that both site’s searches are going to disappear, so now Chinese piracy will virtually end over night.”

IFPI keeps this up, they’ll end piracy everywhere. Good job, guys! Keep it up.

I'm not trying to be racist but China's way to serious, they need to chill out a little.
