Google forms partnership with state officials
Quote:
Florida state officials have collaborated with Google Inc. to create new search engine features for those looking for government services online.
"This public-private partnership is an innovative way to improve the accessibility of state information with all Floridians," said Gov. Charlie Crist, in a release. "I am grateful for this chance to join with Google to further develop Florida's leadership in delivering open government services to the people of Florida."
Officials with both the government and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said the public is utilizing search engines more and more to gain access to government services. But because many of the state's data on Web sites cannot be found on standard search engines because of how they are stored in databases, the new partnership is geared to help better index online databases, making them easier to find through search engines.
"Every day, millions of people turn to search engines to find the authoritative and trustworthy information provided by their government, and it is our mission to help them connect with this content," said Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications and public affairs at Google, in a release. "Florida has joined a growing circle of states that are taking a significant step to make their online information and services more accessible to their citizens."
Information now available through the search engine includes reports regarding water and waste permitting through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Web site as well as information on individual schools using the Florida Department of Education's Web site.
Florida joins California, Arizona, Michigan, Utah and Virginia as one of the first states to partner with Google to improve accessibility of its online services.
Google, based in Menlo Park, Calif., had revenue of more than $10.6 billion in 2006.
