There are two very popular free peices of software - Avast is one, the other slips my mind at the moment - but be careful as one of the two are only free for personal use and a low cost license must be purchased for a commercial use.

We use http://www.kaspersky.com/ which isnt free but is very low cost and exceptionally good - we used both the highly recommended free ones and both times they let virsuses through but KasperSky hasnt let a thing through to date (and has won many lab tests/ awards etc)

    EDIT
AVG is the other free one - amazing what you remember when you stop trying

I have used free and I recommend investing in a good purchased one. My Favorite for the last 4 years has been System Suite. You can purchase it for $40 for three licenses. It comes with updates for a year and a whole bunch of useful tools to keep your computer running good. It is also compatible with Vista which is a big plus if you buy a new computer.

Their firewall is one of the best I ever used and since I have been the software, I have never had a virus that as not caught by the system.

Avoid Norton and Mcafee because I seen both allow viruses to do damage to the computer before they are even detected.

Kaspersky or NOD32(if you can figure out how to run it - but since you are asking a question like this, you prolly wont be able to - so get kaspersky, its the second best ;) )

I use McAfee and have never had a problem. It was quite expensive, but worth it.

Norton is the worst muthaphucka of all anti viruses, I wouldn't use it if my life depended on it.

    DOWN WITH NORTON!

I am using Kaspersky but soon i will be installing Norton.Last week i scanned my PC with Kaspersky and did not get any virus/spyware notification, then i also scanned with trial version of Nortan and it detected 2 spyware, the only problem with nortan is it takes lot of system resources but still worth it.

Yes Jimmy you are right... Norton will slow down you PC. McAfee is also good one but still have a same problem... I am using NOD32 for last 3 months and satisfied with its results and performace...

For Spyware, I am using Spyware Doctor :)

Jimmy, use System Suites, it has the same features as Norton but much easier to use and it keeps everything out.

My Aunt used Norton and paid the high fee every year and a virus passed through and wiped out her hard drive. Norton's answer was who software (one and a half years old) was outdated and she needs to buy the newest version. Seems odd since she paid every year to keep her system up to date. They also never notified her that her version was outdated.

I used the same version of System Suites for 4 years before they emailed me to tell me that I needed a updated version to continue receiving updates.

AVG, Kaspersky, Avast- there are some pretty good ones out in the market apart from big daddies Norton and McAfee.

For Spyware, Adaware SE or Spybot- Search and Destroy.
