Interesting... Still hard to measure ROI though. But makes it easier nontheless.

Wonder when radio is next. And TV!

Next up... text based TV ads in the bottom corner. Contextual based on what you are watching.

And if you ring your family to say you are on TV you get banned for inflating impressions...

From a technical standpoint, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to determine the context of a program (or even a part of a program) since you can just pick up the closed captioning text (which Google is already doing).

Contextual TV ads may not be too far away. Just as described in Batelle's "The Search".

Here's my super informative answer....

I don't know and I don't know

I haven't placed the bids yet...but have a very good idea of what the ad space is worth. I worked in direct marketing/direct mail/media buying for 10+ years. Buying the ad space in those pubs direct would be a piece of cake...I'm more interested in the process Google is putting in place to facilitate these buys, and, if buying via Google actually saves $ vs. going direct.

I'll try and keep everyone informed as I get some insight into the process.

But why should we...

... pay Google to be a middle man? I have to wonder what's the price differential between the winning bid and paying the magazine directly to run your ad. It's a question of supply and demand. Currently there are only a limited number of magazines available while I suspect there are many more interested advertisers.

is like when you pay google to be a middle man in content network. Don't know about print bizz, but in adwords/adsense for every $1 you pay, about $0.78 reachs the site owner.

The print using google has the advantege that G forces all magazines to the same standards, so if you decide to broadcast a print ad, you will save a lot of your time.

Ok, bids in on two publications. 1/4 & 1/2 pages ads.

I doubt I'll win this time around. Even though my bids are slightly above fair market value I'm willing to bet this first round will see some inflated prices due to it being the first public test.

You get zero insight when you bid so it's a complete shot in the dark.

The deadline to submit a bid has been extended until 2/24.

Makes me think they didn't get very many bids...
