I've continually noticed that almost all my sites get the more traffic from Google. This is to be expected because Google is the biggest - however it doesn't own 90% of the search market which is what my own stats would suggest. This seems to be down to the fact that Yahoo and MSN are just not very good at keeping out poor sites - Yahoo and MSN results are much easier to manipulate if you follow a particular formula - and MSN and Yahoo results are full of such sites, blocking genuine sites from appearing higher up in the results. Do others agree? What's your split on SE traffic - answer in the poll.
Mine is about 50/50, I never thought I would get as much search engine traffic as people was saying, but some time ago I was so surprised that about half of my traffic was from Google (only get about 2% from yahoo and msn).
On my old proxy over 90% of my traffic was from Google. The site was called IP-Hider and that name also belongs to a very well known software.
I usually see majority of traffic from google. Not as much as 90% but around 60 and remaining i get from social sites.
It's not quite 90% from google for me (of search engine traffic). I get a lot of traffic from links on other sites, too.
95%+ is from google. I'm number one for my keyword, above wikipedia, in google but still not in the top 3 pages for yahoo.
Yes, most is from Google, MSN has recently increased. And I don't think Google is giving me such a majority of traffic just because MSN and YAHOO aren't able to keep out bad sites. I see plenty of bad sites in Google!
90% from yahoo on one of my sites, that is down to me ranking in top 3 for my main keywords in yahoo but nothing in google. I do use ppc on google to make up for it while i work on improving my google serps .. however i am enjoying a 30+% ctr on ppc making it very cheap =D
I am the same as you Jason, I get insignificant traffic from Yahoo and msn. In fact without google I would not have a business.
It's only normal that you get more traffic from Google then from other search engines. Since the majority of the internet users are searching with Google. So you'd expect something equal to the marketshare of all the search engines, right?
so that doesn't match what the poll is saying. Would be interesting to know where the peeps that are putting together the stats for SE market share are getting their numbers from. Not the DP forums, thats for sure.
I run a number of deeply technical sites on IT security. They cover howtos as well as our own products (we make money from the product, not advertising on these sites). I also run some open source sites. On all of them, there hardly is any visitor besides from Google. AOL search was never seen I thought this was due to the conent and the target base. Now I have started to set up a few not so technical sites, for example on my space shuttle launch viewing trip. Contrary to my expectation, the majority of traffic is still from Google... Interesting to hear that at least some other folks see the other engines - I begun to wonder how these make a living... Rainer
Tried to find the market share quickly, came up with stats from june/july. Bit old, but don't think that it's has changed a lot since. http://home.compete.com.edgesuite.net/site_media/upl/img/SW-JuneSearchShareChart.gif Google: 62.7% Yahoo: 19.6% MSN: 13.2% But then.. when comparing them on www.compete.com, it shows completely different stuff, or I'm doing something wrong here... Edit: I think that's because of comparing the complete websites, not just the search engine. So also the email part and such..
