My Norton antivirus has just ran out and I've been told you're better not getting Norton because its the ones all the hackers target.

Which Antivirus program do you use and what would you recommend?

I still use Symantec but I just get the newest version each year. I've never had a problem.

    AVG is good too though

I've always used Symantec and have never had a problem. Just make sure you schedule live update and don't do silly things like open dodgy e-mail attachments and you should be fine :)

    This is what you need...

As a side note, Avast is *very* good - It scans the machine on bootup before viruses get a chance to activate.

I used to actually deal with this sort of stuff in the past as far as bypassing anti-virus programs. In general I would have to say they all provide really no huge security unless its a reported mass spread and that paticular type of worm gets added to the security update.

However, if there was some sort of trouble 'sometimes' usually was it would because Kaspersky anti-virus, its by far the cleanest and best on I would say as far as doing it's job compared to others. Norton is completly useless, it has trouble detecting worms with a filesize change. So, I would say go with Kaspersky if you must have an anti-virus in the first place.

From what i see on security forums the combination of Nod32 and Ewido is the best you can get.

Nope. I would say NEVER use Symantec Firewall. My own experience of an earlier version of that particular firewall ended with my computer being turned into a paperweight. The firewall, or rather, a security hole in the firewall, actually allowed access to my computer for some ne'erdowell using some script or other.

While I saw the joke when all of my desktop backgrounds began to autorotate using pics of naked ladies, and even thought it was funny when my folders began to randomly rename themselves, I wasn't impressed with the reformatting of my HD and the corruption of sector zero.

I realise the product has moved on since then but there have been several security issues concerning that particular firewall over the last few years, so I wouldn't trust it with a matchbox.

Having said that, the antivirus is ok. Maybe Mcafee would be a better choice?

I use freeware firewall: Kerio Personal Firewall
and BitDefender Antivirus package. I think it is best one. Also contain firewall and antispam. I tried norton, avg, kaspersky and fiew more.

Easy to setup. In minutes. Does not have stupid question. And allways are on.

Kaspersky Personal. Very effective, usually a top performer and they are fast to detect new viruses and trojans. A publicly released trojan might last 12 hours at best before they detect it. Have been using it for four years now.

That's true Kaspersky is the fastest when it comes to updating their Databases with new Malware threats in contrary with Symantec that is the latest with adding new signatures.

Free software is nice but for me it wouldn't be enough since they are always running after the facts.
