Can someone look at my site?

I started designing my personal websites back in 1997, and about six months ago decided that I would like to create a website to sell items online. But I only have one problem, I didn't know much about search engine optimization. So I have been doing my homework, learning about backlinks, keyword density and other SEO information. But I am still not ranking as high as I feel my website could. That is why I would be so happy if one of you bright SEO people could take a look at my website and give me some tips on what I am doing wrong. It is located at - http://www.jrpublishers.com -.

So I put in Family Gift Ideas on Google and didn't see you in the top 500.

Here is the deal. Your site is a sub domain of this site:

    hostrocket.com

and they are marketed well, but your url isn't as much. So google takes the domain name with the most marketing and places that URL.

your domain name resolves into this one:
    jrpublishers.hostrocket.com

and it looks like YOUR domain name not even a year old yet.

so what you need to do is stop using them as a subdomain, and put out your own site/URL.

hostrocket might do this subdomain thing because you are using there shopping cart system, or there hosting.

you won't have your own Search Engine placement untill you get away from there subdomain.

or just start linking really heavilly to jrpublishers.hostrocket.com

have you pushed that domain or just the jrpublishers.com becuase Google is dispalying this one: jrpublishers.hostrocket.com

That is simply not true. In fact, the sub-domain might even work better than a young domain like the one in question. I would see if you can get a link to your site from the main domain (hotsrocket.com) if you do not already have one.

You will also want to make sure you are using a 301 redirect and not a 302 as it appears you are using. Here is the header check info I found:

    HTTP/1.1 302 Found
    Date: Thu, 02 Feb 2006 00:01:38 GMT
    Server: Apache/2.0.49 (Unix) PHP/4.3.9
    X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9
    Location: http://www.jrpublishers.hostrocket.com/
    Content-Length: 0
    Connection: close
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
    X-Pad: avoid browser bug

This will help to ensure you get credit from G for links that point to jrpublishers.com and to the subdomain (btw, be sure you are 301'ing non-www jrpublishers.com as well as www.jrpublishers.com to the subdomain). Aside from that, there is plenty to learn here about what you can do to help improve your Google rankings. Read and ask questions....but, try to find the answers in the forums first.

    Good luck.

Thanks coloradodeath and chachi for the information. I have been marketing as jrpublishers.com, and not as jrpublishers.hostrocket.com. I think I must have been under a rock, I didn't know about 301 redirect or 302 redirect. So I did some research, and went to where my domain is, and put hostrocket as my name server. I hope I did it all correctly, but I guess I'll know in 72 hours. Keep your fingers crossed.

    Thanks again!

Ummm, wasn't talking about making them your nameserver. Sounds like you might be forwarding jrpublishers.com to the subdomain via your domain registrar (who you registered the domain with)? A 301 will tell people that the move is permanent. A 302 means temporary...and you will get credit for your links in Google's eyes, if you use a 301. Now, changing your nameservers to hostrocket is not the same thing. I am unclear on what you are doing :)

Oh no, now I think I am confused. Ok, let me start again. Namezero is my domain register currently. (Thinking of moving to godaddy.) And my website is freely hosted at hostrocket. So when I go into my account at namezero, I can either mask or unmask my forward address. I had it forwarding it to hostrocket, but unmasked. I did this because I wanted to have differnent keywords and titles on all my pages. So I guess I am very confused on how I can change my site from a 302 forward to a 301. If it isn't with the nameserver, how is this done?

I just got finished masking my url forward, so it got rid of the 302 redirect problem, but I will lose my ability to change keywords and title on the rest of my site. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. :)
