Google + MySpace = OpenSocial
Hi All,
Having just read the following article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7074235.stm It's made me think are there any more oportunities for start-up web sites in the social networking realm anymore? It used to be that social networks were simple organic sites that just grew in popularity by word-of-mouth but now the big players are involved, and they're putting a lot of money into it, is there room for the small guy anymore? It appears that the power is now with the application developers - the real hardcore programmers - out there. It's whoever can create the Facebook killer app rather than who can create the next big web thing. Does this article change the way that you're going to approach creating websites? Cheers, p. |

No. There's no more chances left. Give up and become a slave to the man.

There is always room its not all about money,
All the the biggest web empires ebay, google etc.. came from idea's and no money. |

I do not think there is much left for small players like us. Who can be up against Google and Microsoft?

I agree - if you're a good developer then it's never a problem. But if you're a good developer (I'm not!) and you have a good idea then you're on the gravy train big time
![]() Mind you that's not the only way to make money - I visited Shoemoney's blog today for the first time in ages and he's made me realise that I need to diversify away from the build-site-make-it-popular-get-traffic-make-money-from-adsense blinkered way of thinking ![]() Cheers, p. |

That is one area where there is always room, Social Network users are so fickle, they move from one site to the other so fast....remember livejournal? I don't even use myspace anymore...myspace was big when zuckerman and some of his college buddies started facebook.

Social network site owners are easy to make money. Remember the myspace sites generating loads?
