How long did it take for your new site to become profitable with adsense?

Just wondering what kind of timeframe people are experiencing in making a new site profitable with adsense.. lets say in the $xxx a month area?

is it a few months or perhaps a year?

I have a few new sites and im curious to see how other people fare in this area.

It took a couple of months. However with good content and hard work, my sites are finally starting to make a profit.

You know, out in the world, if you start a business, or buy a business, your expectations of making money are a lot different than on the net.
Think about it.

I think about my net properties like I think about an offline business.
Work them up, get them out, and not think about profits really coming in until that property has been on the net for at least a year.

Too many people think, hey...I put adsense on my site, how come I am not making thousands per day like those so called "gurus" told me would happen?

Adsense income is derived from people clicking on the ads. Those people have to come from advertising your site.
Advertise for visitors, see adsense income go up.

I have an information content site that has a lot of sub-domains on a variety of information...from computer, web design, womens, fashion, childrens and so forth.
Adsense income is coming, but only as I advertise the site.
So far, not too much advertising as I and my partner are really pushing our new membership site.
But soon....or not, since without advertising the site, visitors are tripping in and clicking some adsense every day...even sold 2 books via amazon!

Thanks for your advice IowaDawg, i understand that this process is different for every person and im in this for the long term.

I think its valuable that people new to this know what kind of effort and or time frame it takes to make a solid income. It wont happen overnight but it will happen

Got to keep in mind, what is a good income for one person, is a pittance for another.
One thing everyone needs is a goal.
Just to put up a site and want to make money is not a goal.
To make a good income with that site, is not a goal.
A goal would be something on the order of:
In six months, my site will be making xxxx per day (week or month) with adsense.
Now with a goal, you have a factual figure to shoot for, a time frame that will work for you (time frames different for everyone and for every site), and you can then flesh out what you need to reach your goal.

I see so many people get a site (and feel sorry for those people who are naive enough to get a free website) and expect to make money without knowing how, when, or where.

Keep in mind, the so called "gurus" did not make thousands, or millions, overnight!
Those that came close to doing so, did something to create that income.
They had a goal, a plan.
Something I found out about a lot of these "gurus":
They joint venture with another "guru" who is already successful!

Depends on what kind of site you have, and what kind of instant linkage you can provide yourself. Instead of starting on a new domain, I used a subdirectory. Google almost immediatley indexed it, and a month and a half later, I'm making around $15/day. People say you should always get a new domain when you're starting a new site, but I'm beginning to realize that's crap. If you have a site that's already getting indexed regularly, creating a sub-site on the same domain means almost immediate inclusion into Google's SE and others (i.e. no sandbox).

Yes it depends on a lot fo factors.

Inbound links
Age of site
Quality of Content
Updating rate etc.

For my first month I made $.63 now I'm up at $21 in 6 months.

It takes time and effort to get your site out there. But if your content is good and you rank well in SE you'll do fine eventually.

I'd say give it a year. For me I'm making more money each month.

Yes, sub domaining is the way to go!
Why instead of getting 40 domains for 40 content sites, I got 40 sub domains on one domain that was already in google!

Sub domains are like this: www.cars.yoursite.com
Not like most people put it: www.yoursite.com/cars

Same with new material, I have a site that sells ebooks.
When I get a new ebook to sell, I sub domain it!
Just as easy to have people go to www.newebook.yoursite.com
as to go to www.yoursite.com/newebook
And google picks up that subdomain faster than a new folder.

If your site is set up for google sitemapping, you are in business!

I have a six month old site with a new domain. It took me five months to make first $100. This month flirting with $100 dollars for the month but it's going to be close My goal was to make hosting money but now that I have tasted blood the new goal is to make 100 a month to keep in the payment cycle.

The only overheads I have was the domain price and hosting for a year which was $60 and made that back within 2 months. Again all depends on your site.

As iowadawg use goals, they are always very good drivers. My first week I made a $1 so my goal for week two was $2 and so on, now within 3 months of launching a site Ive made the 1st payment club.

Keep doubling your daily, weekly and monthly goals - you will drive to do better.

I've just arted my 2nd ever site. Been online now for 4 days?

Im getting CTR of anywhere between 12% and 25%. But its only making $2US / day atm, but thats just just 4 days, and I keep adding new content almost every 2 days.

Let's not forget the ad-type and ad-placement factors. You can greatly increase your earings if you choose the right type of ad. For a site I launched two weeks ago, an Adsense rectangle ad would earn me at least $5 a day, but since the site is so new and I'm constantly promoting it, I do not feel comfortable placing that big an ad on it. So, right now, the potential revenue? I'd say about $5/day. Actual revenue? $0.50/day. I never feel comfortable "milking" a site, especially when it's so young, so I'll just have to get the traffic up - and revenue will follow.

Really, a year? I suppose if you invest some big dollars in the domain. Sometimes I hold off on putting advertising on a new site to help it build the initial momentum. Otherwise its a matter of hours or days.
