Old Paper

The idea behind this site is to generate old-looking documents with the text provided by the site users written on it.
The idea may very well be very viral with friends sending each others this kind of documents, and sharing it on social sites (since the generated document is also hosted on the server).

Site features:

• Custom coded
• mod_rewrite links e.g. http://www.oldpaper.info/view-48.html
• Generated documents saved on the server (saving up processing/memory allocation so that the image does not get generated everytime, rather, once an image is genearted, subsequent accesses to the same image is a simple read/display action)
• Formatting done over the given text in order to
  • Divide long words that can go off the margins
  • Divide long sentences into calculated multiple lines
  • Do some uppercase/lowercase formatting depending on charaacters in order to give a better look to the document
  • Make the image fit the text whether it is 1 character or 1000 characters in length

Nice idea, $10... wont this site eat a lot of bandwidth since people would technically be linking to the page, and I presume it will be generated everytime or generated and saved on the server...for people to Hotlink forever...?

 

Hello honey, this is what I was saying, once an image is rendered, next time it will be simply loaded because it will be already on the server.
So the remaining issue is hotlinking, which is rather simple to solve through .htaccess (haven't looked into it yet).
But at first, one would want to give a boost to the site by allowing hotlinking, until it becomes a bit popular.
Just a thought.

 

hmm, I agree. What about the size of the images ? Any way to optimize them ? The one on the homepage seems like more then 200KB if I am right..

honey, as you notice there should be room for the colors withint he image, the text, and the fact it's a png.
I experimented with a smaller font, smaller width, lower png quality, etc... but found the current combination to be the best when it comes to the old-looks of the document.
So yes, quality at the expense of some size

PS: anyone out of random text can generate some at lorem ipsum (no, not my site) and test it on the site. This is the closest to how a random user text can look like.
