How to start with SEO?

I have no knowledge of search engine optimization. I want you people to help me get started in this field. I don't know what are tags and what are keywords. Please tell me the sites or articles that teach me about these things from start.

There is even no sticky in the SEO category of this forum that tells users about basics of SEO. Please help.

u can also start from the Google Webmaster Guidelines as it gives a good overview of what SEO should do.

here is some advice

create a blog and write make regular posts

get active in a forum with your signature file open

submit your site to directories that are similiar to the content of the site

as far as keywords think of anything that is related to your site and put those in
